About us

Welcome. Since HRSD's inception, there has been one overriding mission -- to protect public health and the waters of Hampton Roads by treating wastewater effectively. HRSD returns treated effluent to nature in a way that will continue to nurture our water's delicate ecosystems. HRSD's workforce of scientists, engineers, water quality professionals and other staff know they must be sensitive to the needs of people and also be sensitive to the plants and animals who rely on our ability to protect their habitats. Our Promise: We promise to treat wastewater and recover natural resources to protect public health and the environment. Our Vision: Our communities will have clean waterways and reliable water resources for generations to come.

🎉✨ Feature Friday: HRSD in Action for United Way Day of Caring! HRSD volunteers recently participated in Day of Caring in Portsmouth and Newport News. This annual event is all about businesses across Hampton Roads volunteering to give back to our incredible community. In Portsmouth, volunteers tackled a litter cleanup and spruced up the landscaping at the Up Center, creating a welcoming space for all! Meanwhile, in Newport News, our team built shelves and sorted vital clothing and hygiene supplies, ensuring families are ready for the winter season. We’re proud to be part of such impactful initiatives! It’s all about coming together and making a positive impact.

🚨 In Case You Missed It🚨 Our dedicated crews worked around the clock to successfully pull a pipeline under the James River! 🌊✨ This crucial pipeline will transport sewage from the Boat Harbor Pump Station across the river to the Nansemond Treatment Plant, where it will undergo advanced treatment before recharging the Potomac Aquifer! This project is a huge step forward in enhancing our wastewater management and supporting a sustainable future. Thank you to everyone involved! Significant milestones were reached at Boat Harbor Pump Station! We’ve successfully installed the deepest parts of the building: the piles and slabs. Now construction can continue upwards as we move on with the construction of the walls. The concrete pump in the picture is crucial—it enables us to deliver concrete to the deep and hard-to-reach parts of the project! #SWIFTVA
