About us
Who Are We ? HS4U is a cross-national 3-year long Research and Innovation Action (01/09/2022-31/08/2025), supported by the European Union within the framework of the Horizon Europe programme. Our Objective ? HS4U aims to develop and demonstrate holistic solutions that will facilitate the early detection, prevention, mitigation, and management of large passenger and cruise ships ensuring healthy ship operations and safe return to port over conditions of a health crisis. Our Approach ? HS4U offers a bottom-up evidence-based approach by taking into account 4 Unique Pillars and extending current standardized design and regulatory paradigms toward the shipping industry, promoting principles of modularization, optimization, and smart systems engineering toward the detection, prevention, mitigation, and management of large passenger and cruise ships. 📢Our sister project HEALTHY SAILING has published a fresh paper on 👉The Effectiveness of far-UVC Radiation in Public Spaces: A case study in elevators👈 !!! Check out their #results below and read the full article here 🔗 https://lnkd.in/dyRH5r62 #horizoneurope #scientific #paper

🆕 📣HEALTHY SAILING has published a new article titled "The Effectiveness of Far-UVC Radiation in Public Spaces: A Case Study in Elevators" has been published in ScienceDirect. 📃 Our study explored the use of far-Ultraviolet-C (UVC) radiation at 222 nm to reduce bacterial load in #public spaces, specifically in frequently used elevators. Despite the promising potential of far-UVC to kill bacteria without posing harm to humans, our #results indicated no significant difference in #microbial content between the elevator equipped with a far-UVC lamp and a control elevator. This suggests that the efficacy of far-UVC in such environments may be limited by the high turnover of human traffic, which continuously reintroduces contaminants. ➡ Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/dkWJ6ZmU. #publichealth #publichealthmatters

📢 Our sister project HEALTHY SAILING has just published a new paper "Interventional Study of Nonpharmaceutical Measures (NPMs) to Prevent COVID-19 Aboard Cruise Ships" in the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal. 💡It discusses about mask wearing #effectiveness for COVID-19 prevention aboard cruise ships! 🛳 Read more below 👇 #horizoneurope

📊 Scientific publication about mask wearing #effectiveness for COVID-19 prevention aboard cruise ships! 🛳 HEALTHY SAILING has published a new article titled "Interventional Study of Nonpharmaceutical Measures (NPMs) to Prevent COVID-19 Aboard Cruise Ships," published in the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal. 📌Key Highlights: ▪️We conducted an ecologic #study in which cruise ships in group 1 (passenger and crew populations on 2 cruise ships, ships A and B) and group 2 (passenger and crew populations of 9 cruise ships) carrying #vaccinated populations applied identical NPMs apart from face masking in passengers and physical distancing, which group 1 did not apply ▪️Our ecologic study demonstrated that ▪ COVID-19 infection risk among masked cruise ship passengers was 19.61 times lower than in the community (95% CI 18.86–34.48); ▪ The risk for infection among unmasked #passengers was lower than in the community but not statistically significant (SIR 0.744, 95% CI 0.512–1.045; p = 0.094) ▪️Those findings suggest that NPMs implemented onboard the cruise ships were effective in reducing risk Why it matters: Our ecologic study demonstrated the #safe restart of cruise ship sector operations and indicated that mask use added an extra layer of protection; further studies should be conducted to verify the #results. Masking should be considered in future public health emergencies when making decisions regarding NPMs and other measures that could interfere with international traffic and trade. 📖 Read the full article to explore our #methodology, results, and recommendations: https://lnkd.in/dtkq3MbY #PublicHealth #COVID19 #CruiseSafety #ScientificResearch #CDC
