Today, Acting Secretary Todman announced that HUD is awarding $5 million Winston-Salem State University and Tennessee State University to launch research centers where students will study housing and community development challenges and opportunities in underserved areas. Through the Better Buildings Initiative, HUD and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) partner to support energy efficient updates to HUD-funded multifamily homes and spur decarbonization efforts across America’s entire housing stock. HUD recently recognized Foundation Communities for their efforts to make homes greener. HUD officials toured Foundation Communities' Homestead Oaks Apartments in Austin, TX, which feature 🚿 energy- and water-efficiency appliances ☀️ a rooftop solar system 💧 and centralized heat pump water heater As a result, residents save 40%–50% on utility bills as compared to a conventionally-built property. A resident also shared the enjoyment she gets from the on-site community gardens, which are irrigated using a rain catchment cistern that saves water and reduces utility costs.

With record-high temperatures this year, Americans from coast to coast faced the effects of extreme heat.
