Q: Why do you not recommend bands in between your cross collars? A: The reason we do not recommend using bands in between HULK cross collars is because bands break where HULK clamps do not. HULK cross collars, all styles (Slimcast, Megacast, HULK 1.0-3.0), will sufficiently hold your ESP cable in place. Our clamps are fully annealed ductile iron castings, not stamped. They are designed to deflect and protect against wellbore impacts while also gripping and securing cables without damaging them. By adding bands back onto your equipment string, you will have reintroduced many problems you just solved by installing HULK. Banding leads to failures which leads to huge workover costs, stopped production, and scrapped cable. And if you think you can get away with only using cross collars in “problem areas” and then use bands for the rest, remember: the cost of ownership of single-use banding is actually MORE than it is to own HULK clamps because of refurbishment and all the workover costs and cable scrap you avoid by NOT RUNNING BANDS.
