About us

Hypha Studios is a charity matching creatives with empty spaces & regenerating the high street with cultural hubs & events for local communities. By providing free studios & project space we act as an incubator for creatives to test new ideas without financial obstacles. We provide opportunities to those who might not be able to access space, support or visibility. In return for the free space, creatives organise public events, supporting the locality & benefiting the high street. Hypha Studios emerged as an idea during the pandemic, prompted by the three-sided problem of increasing high street vacancies, loss of community spaces and deteriorating conditions for artists and creatives. Founded by curator Camilla Cole, the non-profit organisation was set up with three core objectives: one, to bring culture and engagements in the arts to the public throughout the UK, two, to help landowners keep their assets alive through an injection of local creativity; and three, to help artists unlock new bounds of creativity by unlocking vacant units, free of charge. By providing free studios & project space we act as an incubator for creatives to test new ideas without financial obstacles. We provide opportunities to those who might not be able to access space, support or visibility. For each creative placed, we also aim to organise a mentoring session of their choice. In return for the free space, creatives organise public events, supporting the locality & benefiting the high street.

  • Meet curators @biodesigncollective that took over a massive 8,000 sq ft former Sainsbury’s in East London- curating “Living with the Living“. They used it for free, and made an incredible community focused art space that “invited fellow humans to explore a world in which our day-to-day lives intertwine in symbiosis with one another, fellow earthlings, and living systems of the earth”. We now need your support to deliver more opportunities like this for artists, and to create spaces that incubate innovation and a space for communities to come to together and engage with art on their high street. As a registered charity working across England, Wales and Scotland, Hypha Studios our mission is to support the next generation of talent with free space - to do this, we rely on public grants, voluntary support and private donations to fund its operations. • Hypha Studios reposted this

My recent talk ‘Nesting Automata’ is now up if you missed it: https://lnkd.in/eW-3TpzV A year-long scientific literature review squeezed into a 30 minute talk for a general public audience! Drawing together common features (or ‘blueprints’) of biological systems across scales, using a lens of computation and complexity science, so we can mimic their design in architecture and robotics. It feels very whole indeed to be blending my art and science practices, using sculptures I developed in simulation to explain complex collective behaviours like nest-building in insects, biochemical signalling in leaf tissue and cell-cell adhesion in tissue growth. Thanks to everyone who came down, and most of all to Hypha Studios for the opportunity to exhibit our group show ‘In Scope’ curated by James Grossman at their Euston space. Open until 22nd February if you still want to check it out.
