In Australia, we just had a state election in Queensland that resulted in a change of government. In the USA, many are fascinated by the political climate and the upcoming election on November 5. The situation is polarising and neck-and-neck. How do communication professionals navigate this landscape? This is the topic of the latest Podcatalyst conversation from IABC. My friend, colleague, and client, David Imber SCMP, GAICD and Kristin Frankiewicz, have a thought-provoking discussion on navigating communication in an election year. David's depth of experience in public affairs, issues and crisis communications and robust understanding of political landscapes make this a must-listen for communication professionals. From finding common ground in polarised spaces to what we can learn from political communications, David shares timely insights for anyone keen to improve their approach in this uncertain and complex environment. #communication #leadership #issuesmanagement IABC Victoria IABC APAC Region

Last week, IABC APAC Region and Mahlab hosted a lunch and learn to discuss Audience First communication. Lily Carlyon Derrick M. Ingle, SCMP, and I examined the topic from an External, Regulatory, and Internal viewpoint. In a world where we sometimes discuss which of the three stakeholder groups is more important, this session examined the commonalities and collective impact of integrated and aligned communication. My key takeaways: -      Know your audience and keep at it -      Business professional first and comms professional later -      Communication is all about people talking to people – humanize it -      Use all the tools you can and want, but know your unique strength as a comms professional – creativity, informed insights and your instinct Thank you, Mahlab, for your support for the event. It was great to have some familiar faces in the audience Kelly Weber, Katie Smith, Sarah Ahmed, Noelle Lim and Rob van Alphen. I have been an IABC member for over a decade now and love the connections I form as a member and volunteer leader. If you are interested in IABC and want to know more, please DM me or contact Chris Saxby and Mae L..

For a business communicator, a crisis can be any situation that could potentially inflict serious harm to your organization’s reputation. Whether it’s a cyber or ransomware attack, an act of violence or vandalism in the workplace, preparing your organization for such events is a worthy investment. No matter what type of disaster situation, good communication is always a critical part of an effective response operation.
