  • Only about half of Ugandans have access to electricity, but its government has set a goal of achieving more than 99% electricity access by 2030. To reach this target, the country is looking to generate nuclear power with the help of domestically sourced uranium. Experts from the IAEA, Argentina, Australia, France and Namibia evaluated Uganda's uranium production cycle and recommended steps to bring the country closer to realizing its nuclear energy goals. • The IAEA announced a €13.7 million commitment to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS) through 49 technical cooperation projects addressing ocean pollution, microplastics monitoring, cancer care, nutrition and water resource management. SIDS have unique and increasing barriers to development, and the fund commitment will provide innovative solutions such as using nuclear science and technology to generate, store and share valuable data for development and help build a more resilient, sustainable future for SIDS. #SIDS4 🔗 atoms.iaea.org/4cDsqsZ

  • On this day in 1934 the first full-body X-ray photograph in colour was taken in a one-second exposure by Arthur Fuchs while working at the Eastman Kodak Company. Fuchs and his colleagues developed a shield that had different densities that could let more X-rays pass through the thicker parts of the body, while allowing less for the thinner areas like the arms and legs. If the shield had a uniform density, they would not have a clear image as thinner areas of the body would be more washed out from too many X-rays getting through, while the thicker parts would be too dark as too few would get through. Their work took X-ray photography to another level, and today it is a key tool used in nuclear medicine to diagnose diseases and health conditions. You can see Fuchs’ X-ray photograph at the Chicago Roentgen Society.

  • ☄️ Today is the International #AsteroidDay — a perfect opportunity to discuss how radiation-based techniques help to analyze celestial objects! Did you know that X-rays are used to study the origins of life in our solar system? Processing samples brought from space is a complex task, as it is particularly important not to damage the sample. X-ray radiation makes it possible to analyze the chemical composition of samples with great precision, as well as in a completely non-destructive way and without complex preparations. X-rays were used to analyze the samples collected by Japan on Ryugu — an asteroid similar to the Sun in their chemical composition. Due to its high carbon content, Ryugu could provide new information about the origin of life on Earth. Scientists were already able to detect rare earth metals in the samples. They also determined that the asteroid originated from a larger “parent” asteroid formed in the outer solar nebula. Read more from DESY: bit.ly/42TfSry

  • IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi to The World Bank: the global consensus calls for nuclear expansion, this needs financial support. Yesterday in Washington, DG Grossi shared with the World Bank's Executive Board the IAEA’s perspective on nuclear energy and said that the IAEA is ready to provide technical support to multilateral development banks #MDBs on nuclear infrastructure development including nuclear safety, security and safeguards. The World Bank and other MDBs currently do not contribute financing to nuclear power new build projects. DG Grossi said that financing nuclear power would better align MDBs with the “new global consensus” forged at #COP28, where the world called for accelerating nuclear power deployment along with other zero emission energy technologies to achieve decarbonization. atoms.iaea.org/4cji5lH

  • Two African laboratories—Zimbabwe’s Central Veterinary Laboratory and Uganda’s Directorate of Government Analytical Laboratories—have attained accreditation to the international standard for testing and calibration in laboratories with the support of the IAEA and FAO. These accreditations are instrumental in enhancing food safety in the region. Food business operators in Zimbabwe and Uganda can now rely on these local laboratories to test poultry, fruits, vegetables and other food products for any chemical hazards rather than having to send samples out of the country for testing. This reduces costs and minimizes the risk of spreading transboundary diseases. Accredited laboratories can also play a role in investigations including forensics, poisoning and paternity tests. atoms.iaea.org/4eHOp3l
