Youth advocacy in mental health is a force to be reckoned with. Young people deserve a seat at the table, especially when decisions about their future and the direction of mental health are being made. Last week, at the Active Minds, Inc. 2024 Mental Health Conference, 400 young changemakers came together, showcasing the power of youth voice in action—proving that when young people speak out for mental health change, the world should listen. Team Inseparable was proud to witness it firsthand.

So proud of the legislative work getting done in my home state of #Delaware. 🎉 🎉 🎉 Thanks to Speaker Valerie Longhurst and all the bill sponsors as well as to all the school professionals, supporters, and Delaware State Education Association (DSEA), who helped get these bills over the finish line. And a special shout out to inseparable's incredible Angela Kimball for all the behind-the-scenes advocacy work that helped us get to this moment. You and your team are remarkable!! These efforts began years ago - yes, before COVID 19 - with a few quiet conversations in our little state about how we can effectively, proactively address youth mental health needs early. It was decided that we'd start with elementary schools (HB 100) since 50% of lifetime mental illnesses emerge by the age of 14. Then we moved on to middle schools (HB 300), and now - finally - high schools (HB 200). 🎉 🎉 🎉 And there have been a number of additional school policies along the way, most recently, HB 5! This work will be life-changing for so many young people and their families. Thank you. 🙏

We're incredibly proud to see House Substitute 1 for HB5 and HB200 cross the finish line and become law, marking a major milestone for school mental health in Delaware. Our very own Angela Kimball, who helped craft HB5, was in attendance as Governor Carney signed the bills into law yesterday. Delaware is a national leader in #youthmentalhealth with a real champion in Speaker Longhurst, who got the bills to the Governor’s desk. This is the very kind of hard work and solid policy that quietly changes lives. With more mental health providers available for the youth who need them, this is a significant victory for mental health in schools. As students gear up for a new school year, it's worth celebrating that access to crucial support is on the way. Way to go, Delaware! 🎉 Read more about this mental health win: bit.ly/3AeeDuz

“Entering inpatient treatment takes courage as well as hope, and indeed, desperation. Unfortunately, the reward many of these young people receive for this step toward healing, recovery, and exiting homelessness is to be discharged back to emergency shelters, drop-in centers that have no beds, or worse.” We can do better.
