About us

The International Association for Volunteer Effort (IAVE) exists to promote, strengthen and celebrate volunteering in all of the myriad ways it happens throughout the world. With members in 70+ countries, we are the connective tissue of a global network of leaders of volunteering, NGOs, businesses and volunteer centers that share a belief in the power of volunteers to make a significant strategic contribution to resolving the world’s most pressing problems. Our Core Functions: - Advocacy: We use key global, national, regional and, where appropriate, local forums, institutions and communication channels to advocate for recognition and advancement of volunteers and volunteering and on issues of critical importance. - Knowledge development and dissemination: we foster the development of new knowledge about volunteering through research and organized learning activities and actively share that knowledge. - Network development and mobilization: We create and sustain networks of like-minded stakeholders and members in order to strengthen our shared capacity to pursue our mission. Examples include, but are not limited to, our Global Corporate Volunteer Council (GCVC) and our Global Network of National Volunteer Centers. - Convening: We bring together, in person and online, leaders in volunteering to discuss, debate and deepen our shared understanding of volunteering and its potential as a global force for good. Examples include, but are not limited to, world and regional conferences, in-person meetings of our networks and webinars.

In February 2020, IAVE began a major research project on the state of corporate volunteering internationally. By March, the world was in the grip of a global pandemic. We continued to work, gathering insights from 80 companies operating in over 175 countries, with a combined workforce of over 8 million people. "Corporate Volunteering for a Post-Pandemic World" captures the beginning of a new era in global volunteering that we are just beginning to understand. The report covers nine trending topics such as impact measurement, cross border volunteering and disaster response. A followup report, released last year, explores regional issues in greater depth. A new study on the relationship between online volunteering and well-being in China finds that, like volunteering generally, volunteering online also improves people’s sense of well-being through the mediating role of “online bridging networks.” Researchers Wenyi Lin & Jianxin Cheng used data from the 2019 Chinese General Social Survey (CSS), which interviewed more than 10,000 urban and rural families. Based on the findings, the study encourages organizations to establish online social networks for potential volunteers, as well as invest in improving digital literacy of employees and volunteers for better online volunteering services. How do you connect with volunteers in your area? In the United States, the Covid pandemic inspired a networking platform that bridges the gap between volunteers and volunteering opportunities—and sometimes between political factions. 616 Service also launched “Service Pods” to connect volunteers to teams with regular volunteer assignments.

Dania Franco was part of IAVE’s 8th Youth Volunteer Conference in Mexico in 2016. “I met incredible people and discovered a world of possibilities for volunteering,” she says. “In Mexico, we even formed a network to continue promoting national volunteerism through social camps. Our group is called Impulsando Voluntades.” Currently, Dania is pursuing a master’s degree in Governance and Globalization at Universidad de las Américas Puebla (UDLAP). For her final practicum, she is collaborating with Iraida Manzanilla Guerra, Latin America Coordinator of IAVE’s Global Network of Volunteering Leadership (GNVL), to develop a strategic plan aimed at improving governance in the LATAM region. “I believe it is essential to forge alliances between academic institutions, organizations and volunteers to promote social development and work collaboratively, bridging theory and practice,” she writes. From July to December this year, she is conducting interviews with members of the GNVL and analyzing legal frameworks to develop concrete actions to maximize the effectiveness of GNVL members as changemakers and enable them to facilitate and grow volunteer engagement in Latin America. “I am very excited about this opportunity to continue contributing from an academic perspective to such an incredible global movement dedicated to advancing volunteer efforts,” Dania says. Learn more about GNVL at iave.org/gnvl.

IAVE’s 27th World Volunteer Conference will acknowledge how difficult progress has been toward Agenda 2030 — the set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals adopted by every United Nations member — but will make the case that volunteer action has untapped potential to help the world meet those goals. Last year, the United Nations recognized this potential when it announced 2026 will be the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development. “The World Volunteer Conference is a vision of hope for a better world,” said Nichole Cirillo, executive director of IAVE. “It is also a jump start into action and awareness about volunteer contributions to sustainable development, in anticipation of the International Year of Volunteers in 2026.” Learn more about the 27th IAVE World Volunteer Conference at www.wvc2024busan.kr. #WorldVolunteerConference
