In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), we're excited to spotlight an insightful conversation with Dr. Hedvig (Hedi) Hricak, the newest member of iCAD’s Board of Directors. Dr. Hricak, a renowned radiologist, is a faculty member at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and chairs the US Cancer Moonshot 2.0 Lancet Oncology Commission.  After attending the Cancer Moonshot panel at the White House Africa Cancer Care Forum, she highlighted some points everyone should know about the challenges posed by breast cancer in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), and particularly in Africa: 1. Breast cancer is a leading cause of premature deaths among women in LMIC, with dramatic social and economic repercussions. 2. Breast cancer mortality rates in sub-Saharan Africa are among the highest in the world. 3. 80% of patients in LMIC do not have access to oncology care. 4. There is a growing global healthcare workforce shortage that is especially severe in LMIC. 5. In Africa alone, the healthcare workforce shortage is expected to reach 6.1 million by 2030. 6. Research is needed to understand the specific genetic, lifestyle and other factors that affect breast cancer incidence and mortality in LMIC, including those in Africa. 7. Research data from populations in African and other LMIC are essential to improve the validity of AI models used for cancer prevention and care in the United States. Dr. Hricak emphasized that we can make a difference, recalling Nelson Mandela’s remark, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” She recommended the following next steps: 1. Expand international and inter-institutional partnerships to create more oncology-related fellowships for healthcare workers from LMIC. 2. Provide funding and incentives to encourage healthcare workforce retention in LMIC. 3. Utilize digital platforms to connect healthcare providers within and between nations and enable continuous medical education. 4. Reduce workforce needs by utilizing digital health tools, including AI, to supplement workers’ expertise and streamline workflows in LMIC. 5. Meet “Ruth,” a 79-year-old woman who had a screening that was originally determined to be negative 14-months ago. But when the case was reviewed again today using ProFound AI Detection, the lesion was clearly identified in that original mammogram.
