  • On the International Day of Disaster Risk Reduction each year, archives, galleries, libraries, museums, historical societies and cultural heritage sites across Australia are urged to take a step forward in disaster risk assessment and preparation for cultural heritage protection. This year Blue Shield Australia is supporting AICCM's Disaster Preparedness Calendar and a webinar on October 14 to publicise disaster preparedness planning. Please join us for the online launch in conjunction with International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on Monday 14 October at 2pm Australian Eastern Daylight Savings time. The event will include a discussion around the question: “When faced with recovering cultural material following a major disaster event Should we save everything? Can we save everything?” Speakers include Kingsley Mundey (Executive MBA IAS Fine Art Logistics) and Zola Maddison (Director of Training and events Australian Library and Information Association and ALIA representative on Blue Shield Australia) Date: Monday 14 October Time: 2pm–3pm (AEDT) Location: Online via zoom.   • The ICOM Australia Awards acknowledge and celebrate the outstanding contributions made by individuals and Institutions in Australia that have strengthened international relations and enriched the cultural landscape of museum and galleries. The awards were presented last night by ICOM Australia Chair, Jessica Bridgfoot as part of the opening night celebrations at the 2024 AMaGA conference in Ballarat, Victoria. The Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney won the 2024 ICOM Australia Award for an institution. It is the first university museum to receive this award. The judging panel said the Chau Chak Wing Museum demonstrated outstanding commitment to working with museums in the Pacific, and leadership in the repatriation of Indigenous culture. The 2024 ICOM Australia Award for an individual was awarded to Ruth McDougall from the Queensland Art Gallery/Gallery of Modern Art for her work with artists, institutions, and communities across Oceania and her role in caring for stories, artworks, relationships and conversations across the Pacific for more than 20 years. The judging panel praised McDougall's commitment to working with Pacific communities over many years and her pivotal role in elevating our understanding of contemporary art practice across the Pacific through exhibitions, publications and scholarship.   • The deadline for the ICOM Award for Sustainable Development Practice in Museums has been extended! The ICOM Award is the first global award organised by ICOM that specifically acknowledges and honors sustainable development practices within the museum community. It aims to encourage the participation of museums in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and shed light on the concrete actions and the diverse ways that museums are working towards sustainable development. WHO CAN APPLY? If your museum has successfully implemented sustainable development actions and completed a project, ICOM wants to hear from you! Submissions will be judged based on the impact created by the project. Initiatives should demonstrate clear results, outcomes,or impact.   • The Standing Committee of Ethics (ETHCOM) invites ICOM members to a global webinar on the Revision of ICOM Code of Ethics on the 16th of September. The webinar will launch the next phase of the ICOM Code of Ethics revision, focusing on explaining the revision process and presenting the first draft of the revised Code. ICOM members will be invited to contribute their insights and feedback. The first draft of the revised Code of Ethics will be presented to the ICOM community during the global webinar on the 16th of September at 14:00 Paris time (CEST). ICOM members are encouraged to participate, gain a deeper understanding of the Code of Ethics revision, and, most importantly, explore how they can contribute to the next steps of the revision process by sharing their valuable feedback, which will help shape the final draft of the revised Code of Ethics for Museums. Members are invited to participate in the global webinar and contribute to the review of the draft Code through their respective committees.
