With such a focus on sustainability in the food packaging space, the environmental, economic, and humanitarian consequences of food waste are something that cannot be ignored. It is estimated that in the US 1/3 of all food grown never makes it to a person’s stomach. Not only is this a staggering loss of food, but it is a tragic loss of wasted resources including fresh water, wasted fossil fuels, and unnecessarily deforested land. Not to mention that food sitting in landfills generates methane – a greenhouse gas 80 times stronger than carbon dioxide. But it turns out that packaging, when properly designed in a manner that holistically prioritizes sustainability, can actually help the problem. As if meeting all application performance, processing and quality standards weren’t enough for brand owners to consider for their food packaging solutions – now changing regulations and legislations, for example Extended Producer Responsibility, have further complicated the list of requirements that brands must adhere to when developing sustainable & recyclable packaging solutions. Luckily, companies like Plastic Ingenuity have developed their Sustainable Packaging Assessment to help ensure that their customers packaging solutions not only meet their internal goals & targets, but the ever-evolving regulatory requirements.
