AI is detecting breast cancer signs that doctors may miss, much earlier, too. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month continues, we’re proud to highlight work by Dr. Debbie Anaby who is Head of the Breast Imaging Laboratory at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer and recipient of an ICRF Research Career Development Award (RCDA). Dr. Anaby and Professor Miri Sklair-levy, Head of the Breast Radiology Unit at Sheba, have shown that an AI-based system can detect signs of breast cancer in MRIs up to a year prior to the official radiological diagnosis among women with BRCA mutations. While these signs appear as normal breast tissue to the human eye, AI accurately identified them as cancerous in about 70 percent of cases. This research has the potential to change the game for earlier detection of breast cancer and ultimately of all cancers. In an opinion piece in CTech by Calcalist, Dr. Anaby and Prof Sklair-Levy discuss the importance of AI in cancer detection and urge healthcare systems to integrate these tools. About us
Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) supports the best and brightest scientists conducting groundbreaking cancer research in Israel. Our goal is to end the suffering caused by cancer. The Answer to Cancer Is Research. ABOUT US: Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) is the largest nonprofit in North America dedicated solely to supporting groundbreaking cancer research in Israel. ICRF was established in 1975 by a group of dedicated and visionary scientists, physicians and philanthropists in the U.S. and Canada. Their goal: to enable the most promising Israeli scientists to continue their important work in Israel where funds to support basic cancer research remain scarce, leaving too many promising investigations in need of funding. To date, ICRF has invested over $78 million in the most impactful Israeli cancer research, awarding more than 2,500 grants to scientists at all of the leading academic and research institutions throughout the country. ICRF grantees are selected through a rigorous annual peer review process conducted by a world-class Scientific Review Panel (SRP). To insure the most value for every donor dollar, ICRF awards go directly to the researcher without any university or research institute overhead reduction. ICRF-funded research has led to transformative discoveries for treating multiple myeloma, chronic myelogenous leukemia and other life-threatening tumors. More recently, Israeli scientists have made major contributions to immunotherapy research and targeted therapies. Today, ICRF has active chapters across the U.S., Canada and Israel. The International Executive Office is located in New York, NY.

Two important lung cancer discoveries were recently made in two different ICRF researchers’ labs. In Professor Nabieh Ayoub’s lab at Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, a postdoctoral researcher showed how a missing protein may open up new avenues for treating aggressive lung cancer. This research was made possible by an ICRF Project Grant, and an article recently published in Nature Communications acknowledges ICRF support. Read more: https://lnkd.in/evW7UuY8 In Professor Yosef Yarden’s lab at Weizmann Institute of Science, a postdoctoral researcher developed a synthetic antibody that when combined with a common lung cancer treatment, prevents relapse of lung adenocarcinoma tumors in mice. This work was funded by an ICRF Project Grant, and results were published in Cell Reports Medicine: Cell Press. Read more about this in ISRAEL21c — Good News From Israel: https://lnkd.in/e5hG2hAf

Ovarian cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths among women. September is Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month and we're proud to highlight ICRF scientist Ruth Perets, MD, PhD, who has been doing research in this field for 27 years and also treats ovarian cancer patients at Rambam Health Care Campus. Dr. Perets’ work focuses on both prevention and treatment, and she uses mouse models to better understand ovarian cancer development in women. Her current ICRF grant has been made possible thanks to the Beverley Librach Abshez Initiative for Ovarian and Female Reproductive System Cancers. Read more about Dr. Perets’ research, learn about what’s trending in ovarian cancer, and see what life is like for her in Northern Israel during these uncertain times. #ovariancancerresearch https://lnkd.in/ebdYJKW9

Every 3 minutes worldwide, a family is faced with the heartbreaking news that their child has been diagnosed with cancer. Compassionate Israeli researchers are working tirelessly to change the odds for these children who were dealt an unfair hand. In recognition of #ChildhoodCancerAwarenessMonth, we're pleased to highlight ICRF-funded scientist Shahar Frenkel, MD, PhD, and his work at Hadassah Medical Center exploring pediatric eye cancer. This clinician-scientist has saved 98 percent of the lives of the children he treats for localized pediatric retinoblastoma. He's also on a quest to develop a targeted treatment for it. Learn about his research, hobbies, and why he believes that science in Israel is like nowhere else in the world. https://lnkd.in/eJUMfheK
