Changing the world’s energy future and securing our nation's critical infrastructure ⚛️
About us
In operation since 1949, Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory dedicated to supporting the U.S. Department of Energy's missions in energy research, nuclear science and national defense. The world's first usable amount of electricity from nuclear energy was generated here in 1951. At 890 square miles (569,135 acres), the INL Site is roughly 85 percent the size of Rhode Island. In addition to our geographic resources, the lab hosts a variety of unique facilities, including the Advanced Test Reactor National Scientific User Facility. Complementing our nuclear research, the lab has numerous alternative energy and national security programs. Robotics, wind power, high-performance computing, biofuels, critical infrastructure protection, carbon management and advanced vehicle testing are just a few examples of our multifaceted research capabilities. If you are looking for a 21st-century energy or technology career, visit our Careers tab at www.inl.gov.

Delaney Timber Stine is an experiment engineer at INL's Advanced Test Reactor (ATR), where she's helping to shape the future of nuclear technology. ⚛️ 🙌 She plays a crucial role ensuring projects meet safety standards, can be handled by operators and fit perfectly within ATR's unique environment. The system she maintains provides clean, deoxygenated, demineralized water essential for naval experiments to run smoothly. Looking for a new career opportunity? Mychal A.'s (Amoafo) interest in control and energy systems led him to a summer internship at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) working on projects ranging from electric vehicle charging infrastructure to hydroelectric generation. As one of his tasks, he developed a dynamic model for data analytics that would enable INL researchers to identify how hydroelectric plants might be retrofitted to support the nation’s power grid. More about his INL internship experience. ⬇️ #PowerGrid #hydropower #energy #research #hydroelectric #internship #Idaho

Take an inside look at the INL facility where space power systems for some of NASA’s rovers have been tested and assembled. Unlike batteries that need to consistently be recharged, these systems harness the power of nuclear - providing the ability to power missions for at least two decades! ⚛️🚀 Check it out: https://lnkd.in/eHkkEaij NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration #NASA #SpacePower #SpaceExploration #MarsRover #MMRTG #INL75 #NuclearPower #nuclear

INL and the Office of Nuclear Energy | U.S. Department of Energy’s Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) campaign recently hit a big milestone in nuclear research! ⚛️ This summer, the team completed irradiation of an enriched molten chloride fuel salt (UCl3-NaCl) in INL’s Neutron Radiography (NRAD) reactor. This is the world’s first irradiation for this type of liquid salt fuel, establishing a new domestic capability for using neutrons to irradiate enriched fuel salts. Following irradiation, researchers used NRAD to produce radiography imagery of the fuel capsule and are now conducting post-irradiation examinations on the salt and capsule to understand their behavior in an MSR environment. First designed in the 1950s, MSRs are a fuel-efficient, cost-effective type of reactor that can be built at a variety of sizes with a low waste output. Exciting news! The recent $500 million investment in X-energy, led by Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund and backed by other key partners is a major step forward in the commercialization of small modular reactors (SMR). ⚛️ At INL, we’re excited to witness and support these groundbreaking efforts to reimagine the future of nuclear energy. Together, we are pushing the boundaries of innovation to meet the energy demands of tomorrow. Amazon’s commitment to support a 320-megawatt project with Energy Northwest in central Washington shows how SMRs are becoming a central part of decarbonizing large-scale industries. This is massive news. Amazon is investing $500M in X-energy to develop small modular reactors and power its data centers with carbon-free electricity. The partnership aims to bring 5 gigawatts of new power projects online across the United States by 2039 — the largest commercial deployment target of SMRs to date — starting with a four-unit 320-megawatt project with Energy Northwest in central Washington. X-Energy’s Xe-100 reactor is a high-temperature gas reactor that they say can’t melt down and is designed to produce electricity more efficiently. The company's initial Xe-100 demonstration project in Seadrift, Texas, is one of two Advanced Reactor Demonstration Projects supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). 📸: X-energy Learn more: https://bit.ly/3BLpQTX
