About us

Founded in 1965, the nonprofit Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) is one of the oldest and largest membership associations for industrial design professionals. IDSA has thousands of members in dozens of Professional Chapters, Student Chapters, and Special Interest Sections in the United States and internationally. Since 1980, IDSA has produced the annual International Design Excellence Awards® (IDEA), which remains the world’s most rigorous, prestigious, and influential design awards program. Learn more at IDSA.org/IDEA. The Society leads National Industrial Design Day initiatives annually on March 5 and hosts annual events such as the International Design Conference and Deep Dives, bringing together some of the biggest names and brightest minds in industrial design and related fields. Additional programming includes the annual IDSA Student Merit Awards (SMA), IDSA Awards, and Education Symposium. In 2001, IDSA established the Design Foundation: a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to raising awareness of the industrial design profession and providing educational opportunities for students of all ages. Recently the Foundation has repositioned to more strongly focus on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in design. Learn more and donate at IDSA.org/DesignFoundation. • 🌟 IDSA Member Spotlight: Will J. has been recognized with a 2024 IDA Design Award and a 2025 UX Design Award nomination for GoTip, a smart tipping system designed to simplify and improve the tipping experience. By integrating seamlessly with point-of-sale platforms, GoTip allows customers to preset tipping preferences and complete transactions with a single tap, reducing social pressure while ensuring fair compensation for service workers. GoTip was developed through extensive user research, including surveys of 14 NYC coffee shops and hundreds of consumer interviews to identify pain points like guilt-tipping, social pressure, and inconsistent worker income. Initial testing showed a 32% increase in tip income and a 50% rise in tipping rates, proving its real-world impact. "IDSA has been a transformative part of my journey," Will shares. "It introduced me to talented designers and broadened my perspective on what I could achieve in the industry." 📖 Read more about Will’s project and additional member spotlights at https://lnkd.in/eS8MPgQa
