SLPs are part of the treatment team for students with selective mutism. It is important that we dispel myths about the disorder and to recognize that students with selective mutism are not merely shy, oppositional, or defiant. Instead, they are grappling with intense anxiety that prevents them from speaking in specific situations despite speaking easily in more comfortable settings. Understanding this distinction is crucial for providing effective support. Evidence-based treatments exist that can help children manage their anxiety and gradually improve their communication skills.
