IFAW explores new ways to improve conditions for animals, people, and the place we call home.

About us

IFAW explores new ways to improve conditions for animals, people, and the place we call home—and we’ve been leading the way for over 50 years. The problems we confront are urgent, complicated, and resistant to change. Solving them requires fresh thinking and bold action. So we look at the issues from different angles, make unexpected connections, and challenge the way things are done. Partnering with local communities, NGOs, and governments around the globe, we create real-world solutions that make an immediate and lasting impact.

Once a crucial means of communication, the disused and fallen telephone wire lines that now litter sections of the expansive Hwange National Park have undergone a disturbing transformation over the years. They have turned from a useful tool to a deadly threat to wildlife, including endangered species. The wire snares employed by ruthless poachers are often crafted from telephone wire cables. Tragically, kudus, buffalos, impalas, and zebras have been found ensnared in these cruel and indiscriminate traps. To address the threat posed by the wire cables, the IFAW-supported Dete Animal Rescue Trust (DART) is currently conducting an extensive telephone wire removal exercise in and around the iconic park, which forms part of IFAW’s Room to Roam key anchor landscapes. During a similar operation in 2020, the DART team successfully removed 426 kilometers of phone wire, weighing 14.3 tons. This significant achievement potentially prevented the creation of 141,700 snares. We are deeply appreciative of the DART team's relentless efforts to eliminate the old phone lines and safeguard our precious wildlife.

Directeur Technique IFAW K9 Wildlife Crime

I am extremely proud to be participating, as the Technical Director of Canine Unit Projects for IFAW, in the 10th International Ranger Congress currently taking place in Hyères, France. This global event is a true celebration of the ranger community, which plays a crucial role in preserving biodiversity and protecting natural spaces worldwide. The organization of this event, led by the International Ranger Federation and Carole d'Antuoni's volunteers team, is exceptional. The conferences and workshops offered cover a wide range of essential topics for rangers. Among the most impactful sessions, I was particularly impressed by those addressing trauma management in challenging environments, a critical issue for rangers who regularly face stressful situations. The session on integrating human rights into conservation operations also highlighted the importance of respecting local communities in our practices. The practical workshops, especially the building training led by Sean Willmore from the Thin Green Line organization, were particularly inspiring. These workshops emphasized the need for ongoing skill diversification and development among field teams. The increased focus on the inclusion of women in this profession is growing and promising step toward greater equity. This congress has also been an excellent opportunity to connect with professionals from various backgrounds, further strengthening our global partnerships for more effective conservation efforts. Additionally, an official declaration will be released at the end of this event, proposing concrete solutions to the challenges faced by rangers and supporting their contributions to global biodiversity goals. (European Ranger Federation)(International Ranger Federation). I am especially grateful to be part of this community, dedicated to preserving our natural and cultural heritage, and I look forward to the future collaborations that will emerge from this congress for IFAW. #WorldRangerCongress #IFAW #Conservation #RangerLeadership #HumanRights #Inclusion #CanineUnit #Declaration #ThinGreenLine

The coast of Kenya runs for approximately 600 kilometers along the Indian Ocean and the marine ecosystem supports the livelihoods of 2.7 million people. IFAW’s coexistence and conservation approach in Kenya works to reduce pressures on marine species and increase protection measures, while also creating community-led conservation initiatives so that communities depending upon marine ecosystems will still thrive. Senior Program Manager - International Policy

It's challenging to keep up with the amazing work of my international policy colleagues at ifaw and collaborating NGOs such as OceanCare Pro Wildlife and EIA at fora such as #CMS and #IWC! But I'd still like to highlight that Matthew Collis, Joaquin de la Torre and Sharon Livermore attended the IWC69 meeting (22-27 Sept) where all three initiatives put forward by the #EuropeanUnion Member States were adopted. 🐳 The Moratorium Resolution confirmed the necessity and importance of the continuation of the #moratorium on commercial #whaling. 👊 The Chair's concluding remarks? "The IWC has never been more relevant." If you're interested to read more (in Dutch), here's my blog about the relevance of IWC: https://lnkd.in/ezEXChub

Every individual animal rescue is different. And we never know what’s going to happen until we’re there. Amira was rescued in 2019, after she was discovered as a small calf, all alone, standing forlornly next to her dead mother. IFAW’s CEO and President, Azzedine Downes, joined the IFAW and Wild is Life Trust and ZEN rescue teams to bring Amira to safety, and begin her rehabilitation with at the Zimbabwe Elephant Nursery. Now, years later, Amira has taken her first steps back into the wild. Hear the full story from Azzedine as we celebrate this incredible milestone. 💙

Together, we can make a difference for both people and wildlife. This weekend, IFAW CEO and President, Azzedine Downes, had the pleasure of meeting with the Governor of Taita Taveta County H.E. Andrew Mwadime where they signed an MoU to build local institutional capacity to advance community conservation in the #TsavoConservationArea, strengthen community resilience, promote peaceful co-existence and safeguard connectivity of habitats in the Southern Rangelands. President & CEO at International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) | Conservation Expert | Advocate for Communities living with Wildlife & Biodiversity Protection | New book: The Couscous Chronicles, Disruptionbooks.com.

Clearly you can tell from the pictures, I'm thrilled about this. Yesterday, together with my ifaw East Africa colleagues James Isiche and George Okwaro, I had the incredible pleasure of meeting with the Governor of Taita Taveta County H.E. Andrew Mwadime where we signed an MoU to build local institutional capacity to advance community conservation in the #TsavoConservationArea, strengthen community resilience, promote peaceful co-existence and safeguard connectivity of habitats in the Southern Rangelands. ifaw aims to provide technical support to the Taita Taveta County Government to develop a legislative framework to guide conservation practice in the county and ensure communities living alongside wildlife can benefit from wildlife conservation, rather than just suffer from wildlife-human conflict. This landscape is the home to an incredible success story, the rhino population is thriving to the point where the Intensive Protection Zone needs to expand, and we must do so now. #Coexistence #Conservation #Wildlife #TaitaTavetaCounty #Africa

Did you know Southern Africa is home to nearly 75% of Africa’s elephants? With Botswana hosting around 130,000 and Zimbabwe close to 100,000, this region is critical for elephant conservation and aligns perfectly with IFAW's Room to Roam initiative. IFAW was honoured to participate in the technical workshop for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) Programme (2023-2033) in Harare, Zimbabwe. The programme's mission to build an integrated network of conservation areas where shared natural and cultural resources are sustainably managed deeply resonates with our vision. TFCAs are vital for regional cooperation, sustainable resource management, and the conservation of migratory species like elephants. By working together, we can create a thriving network of protected areas in the SADC region, ensuring resilient communities and flourishing wildlife. Together, we can make a difference! 💙 Photo: ©️ Zimparks

When communities are engaged as key stakeholders, they are more likely to participate in wildlife conservation. In Zimbabwe's Matebeleland North province, we take pride in collaborating with the communities around Hwange National Park to encourage peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife. We are excited about the recent conversations we've had with the officials of the Lupane Rural District Council concerning potential collaborations aimed at preserving the environment and offering assistance to the local communities. We firmly believe that by working together, we can have a positive impact and ensure a brighter future for both the people and the wildlife in the area. As part of the Environmental Stewardship Programme (ESP), we are currently providing assistance and conservation education to two schools, Thokoza and Hangano, in Lupane District. To address the issue of human-wildlife conflict in the district, we recently completed the installation of 31 predator-proof bomas. These efforts aim to promote coexistence between humans and wildlife.

Yesterday, IFAW’s senior management team led by Azzedine Downes, CEO and President, and James Isiche, Africa Director, held productive consultative meetings with the Governor of Laikipia County, H.E. Joshua Irungu in Nanyuki, Kenya to discuss plans and steps to secure wildlife corridors, safeguard the connectivity of landscapes within the Northern Rangelands ecosystem, promote peaceful co-existence, and support community livelihoods in Laikipia County. The discussion reaffirmed IFAW’s ongoing support and continued commitment to working with the County Government, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), local communities, and other stakeholders to advance the operationalization of Kirimon Game Reserve for the benefit of both people and wildlife. Kirimon is a critical migration corridor for elephants and other wildlife, allowing species to roam freely between Laikipia and Samburu Counties. The IFAW, Laikipia County, and KWS delegation explored innovative avenues of using this partnership as an avenue to link conservation with food security, access to clean water, and addressing human wildlife conflict in the wildlife rich county. Our combined efforts are critical to not only ensure the connectivity of landscapes to give wildlife ample #RoomToRoam, but also secure a brighter future for both people and wildlife to co-exist peacefully.
