About us
IFLA Middle East - Championing Landscape Architecture Across 13 Nations IFLA Middle East proudly represents 13 member states in the region, including Bahrain, Jordan, Iraq, Iran, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Among these, four national associations have already gained official recognition from IFLA, with efforts underway to establish more. As the youngest and geographically smallest of the Global Federation's regions, IFLA Middle East is dedicated to fostering the growth of landscape architecture, a profession still in its infancy compared to architecture in the Middle East. IFLA ME's mission involves collaborating with other built-environment professions, supporting the introduction of landscape education programs at universities, facilitating research and documentation, and connecting professionals and businesses to drive innovation, creativity, and excellence in practice. Looking ahead, IFLA ME is set to launch several initiatives designed to transform the landscape industry, including heritage preservation, regenerative landscape techniques, nature-based solutions, food security and agriculture, youth empowerment, and academic affairs. Regular updates on these programs, partnerships, and innovative projects will be shared through various communication channels, keeping you informed about the future of landscape architecture in the Middle East.

If you missed Dr Jala's talk at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, you can find it here: https://lnkd.in/dAqmPCa3 Summary: My search for a grounded language on landscape architecture relies in great part on the search for Arabic terms that capture the complexity of the layered English meaning of “landscape.” Until then, we must contend with inadequate translations—and sometimes transliterations—that reduce “landscape” to scenery and narrow the professional scope of the landscape architect to urban beautification. Moving away from the “borrowed” landscapes in cities, we encounter “rooted” conceptions in rural cultures. These ideas have endured over time and are in tune with the regional ecology and cultural values. Here, we find many iterations of “landscape,” even if they can’t be captured in a single word. For example, the traditional house garden typology, the hakura, which originated in the eastern Mediterranean, combines production and pleasure and is grounded in a love of nature and caring for the land. Can these examples inform and inspire a contextualized landscape architecture in the Middle East and beyond? 2025: The Year of the Landscape Architect 🌍🌳 Climate action. Biodiversity loss. Urban resilience. These are the defining challenges of our time, and landscape architects are the key to solving them. With expertise in design, ecology, and planning, we're creating innovative solutions for a more sustainable future. In 2025, the world needs landscape architects more than ever. Let's rise to the challenge. #LandscapeArchitecture #ClimateAction #Sustainability #UrbanDesign #Biodiversity #2025
World Economic Forum calls to hire Landscape Architects to create nature positive cities! Nature Positive Guidelines for the Transition in Cities (2024) by the World Economic Forum underscore the critical importance of integrating nature into urban environments to address pressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and land degradation. This integration is not merely desirable but essential for creating sustainable and resilient cities. The report explicitly highlights the need to hire landscape architects and academics, whose expertise is important for successfully implementing and scaling nature-related initiatives. As the global fight against climate change and biodiversity loss intensifies, landscape architects are taking center stage. At IFLA, we are constantly advocating for the prominent role that landscape architects play. Hence, we have been: Strengthening Ties with UN Agencies: At the World Urban Forum 12 Egypt Forum, we celebrated the signing of an MoU with UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme) to address urgent urban challenges by leveraging landscape architecture to design resilient, sustainable, and inclusive urban spaces. We also forged stronger partnerships with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) Urban Health Programme. A Voice at the COPs: IFLA actively participated in the three COPs held this year—COP16 Colombia on biodiversity, COP29 Azerbaijan on climate change, and COP16Riyadh on desertification. Our presence at these critical summits underscored our commitment to environmental stewardship and highlighted the vital role of landscape architects in mitigating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and combating desertification. Working Alongside Our Global Partners: We established impactful MoUs and partnerships this year with key organizations such as the World Green Infrastructure Network (WGIN), the Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA), and the Urban Biodiversity Network (URBIO). These partnerships amplify our collective voice and expand our capacity to address critical global issues. #landscapearchitects #IFLA #landscapearchitecture #climatechange #biodiversityloss #naturepositivecities
