About us
The Charleston County Aviation Authority (CCAA) owns and operates the Charleston International Airport (CHS), Charleston Executive Airport (JZI) on Johns Island and the Mount Pleasant Regional Airport (LRO). Chartered in 1970 by the State of South Carolina as a special purpose district, it is responsible for managing, operating and developing all public airports in the Charleston County Airport District. The Aviation Authority coordinates its activities with the Federal Aviation Administration and the South Carolina Aeronautics Commission. The Aviation Authority District is governed by a 11-member board. The South Carolina House and Senate delegations representing Charleston County each nominate three members (approved by the governor) and one member is jointly appointed by the Charleston County Council and the Charleston City Council. The mayors of the City of Charleston, City of North Charleston and Town of Mount Pleasant, the chairman of Charleston County Council and the chairman and vice chairman of the Charleston County Legislative Delegation serve as ex-officio board members. The appointed members serve four-year terms.

Breeze Airways™ announced earlier today that will continue its expansion at Charleston International Airport with flights to three previously unserved cities from this region – Albany, New York , Rochester, New York and Burlington, Vermont. Lukas Johnson, chief commercial officer at Breeze, said, "As we continue to develop origin markets going out of Charleston, you'll see us add frequencies beyond twice a week. And that's very exciting for us to find that cycle of additional growth and demand." The start of service to these three cities will mark the 4-year anniversary of the company’s May 2021 maiden voyage to Charleston. “The expansion of Breeze Airways nonstop service to Rochester and Albany will be its 5th and 6th New York State destination offered from Charleston International Airport. The new routes will be welcomed enthusiastically by area travelers. With the addition of our region’s first nonstop flight to the State of Vermont, Burlington becomes the 6th New England route offered by Breeze from our airport, making it the 25th nonstop Breeze Airway city served from CHS. Our travelers have asked for affordable nonstop flights to more destinations and Breeze continues to deliver,” said Elliott Summey, CEO and Executive Director of Charleston County Aviation Authority. He added, “the new service underscores the timely need for facility enhancements that are currently underway. We are confident that Breeze Airways will continue its growth at Charleston International by bringing new opportunities and convenient access to leisure and business travelers alike.” The new markets offered also represents new opportunity for the region’s hospitality industry. "We recognize Breeze carefully evaluates when and where to commit its assets as they expand their network. This announcement is another vote of confidence in our existing partnership as well as our region's travel and hospitality industry. Adding service to three new destinations not only improves access for visitors from the important Northeast markets, it also provides additional connectivity to local residents traveling to upstate New York and Vermont," said Helen Turner Hill, Chairman of the Aviation Authority and CEO of Explore Charleston. “We are naturally enthusiastic for Breeze Airways™ relatively short path to profitability and are equally pleased that the Charleston region continues to play a vital role in their success as the company evolves into national coast to coast carrier.” Hill added. Breeze Airways projects a 15% growth in the region for 2025. In the year ended 2024, Charleston International Airport is 4th fastest growing large or medium sized hub since 2019 in the United States.* ( Source: Cirium Data provided by DIIO)

On May 7, 2025 the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will require Real ID to pass through security at airports across the nation, including Charleston International Airport . It means that you will need the new format State Issued drivers license or identification card that meets the new criteria. A federally issued identification such as a passport will also suffice. Avoid the unusually long lines SCDMV with procrastinators in April and take action now. #YourTravelsOurPleasure #iflyCHS

Exciting news! After a successful first season, Air Canada's nonstop route between Charleston and Toronto returns on March 30, 2025—and demand is stronger than ever. Last year, over 20,000 passengers took advantage of the connection, many continuing on to destinations like Athens, Tokyo, Rome and Copenhagen. This year, service will operate Thursday through Monday to match peak travel demand, and Air Canada is increasing efforts to bring more Canadian travelers to the Lowcountry. We're proud to connect Charleston to the world, one flight at a time. 🌎 Read more in The Post and Courier: https://ow.ly/hqW750UPCe6 #FlyCHS #CHSInternational #AirCanada #NewFlights #AirDevelopment
