I attended the National School Boards Association's CUBE conference in Vegas this week to talk about my favorite thing in the world – teaching kids to read. I had the great pleasure of talking about my friend Kareem Weaver's incredible film, The Right to Read, with a fantastic literacy champion, Almudena G. Abeyta, Ed.D., superintendent of Chelsea Public Schools in MA. The Right to Read tells the story of how one amazing teacher I worked with, Sabrina Causey, used a structured literacy approach to skyrocket the reading proficiency of students at the lowest-performing school in Oakland, CA. We administered a baseline assessment to all the students, and it revealed that almost all the kids were either ½ year or 1 ½ school years behind where they should be. We grouped the kids according to the baseline data and then met with them in small groups for 15 minutes daily and taught them to read using Walpole & McKenna’s Differentiated Instruction (DI). Within two weeks, we started seeing initial results. When COVID hit, instead of stalling students’ progress, the same approach achieved outstanding results over video. We knew we were onto something big. This approach is being used today in Chelsea, and Almi shared the incredible gains her first graders, especially multilingual learners and students with individualized education plans, have made as a result of our just-in-time intervention.
