The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced two new structural measures that will help make care safer and better for millions of people in hospitals. The measures were directly informed by IHI’s work on the National Action Plan to Advance Patient Safety and Age-Friendly Health Systems and together they represent a transformational shift in the policy landscape for patient safety and caring for older adults. IHI President and CEO Dr. Kedar Mate wrote about how IHI supports hospitals preparing for these new measures in a blog published on IHI.org. Read the full blog here: https://bit.ly/4cxjHYd

The problem of medical debt is far from over and now is the best moment to do something about medical debt. In this popular archive episode of Turn on the Lights Podcast, Don and Kedar are joined by Berneta L. Haynes, Staff Attorney with the National Consumer Law Center, for an important discussion on what medical debt is, who is affected by it, why it’s a massive issue in the United States, and how to start solving this problem. Berneta explains the provisions and protections the Affordable Care Act and the No Surprises Act have to protect consumers from unfair medical bills and aggressive collections while highlighting changes and actions that improve the law, reduce debt, and expand the support umbrella across the country. Tune in to learn more about the issue of medical debt and how to tackle it best: https://bit.ly/3SPlctF Turn on the Lights Podcast is also available on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you get your podcasts.

We all need camaraderie, a sense of belonging and shared purpose. This need for purpose and a community of likeminded folks is even more important for health care executives, who experience high rates of burnout. In June 2024, IHI launched a Chief Quality Officer (CQO) Network. This leadership community provides a platform for quality and safety executives worldwide to come together, forge connections, and foster collaboration. Josh Clark, VP of quality and safety operating systems at IHI, recently sat down with Healthcare Innovation for a Q&A on IHI's Care Operating System work—an improvement approach that focuses on fixing systems, rather than people. "In the care operating system approach," he adds, "you're really trying to limit the cognitive load on the clinicians of doing more than just providing the best possible care to the patients."
