Fall Harvest 🍂 Last week, IINE staff, family, and friends came together to pick apples, gather flowers, and feed the adorable farm animals at Parlee Farms. Despite the misty weather, staff from across our three offices and remote teams enjoyed the chance get outside, relax, and get to know one another better! 📸 Check out the pictures from our annual fall retreat and learn more about how you can join our team: https://hubs.li/Q02RHMfl0 #ParleeFarms #applepicking #teambuilding #staffouting #staffappreciation #fallouting #fallvibes

Welcoming refugees and serving immigrants since 1918
About us
Mission The International Institute of New England (IINE) creates opportunities for refugees and immigrants to succeed through resettlement, education, career advancement and pathways to citizenship. History and Context Founded in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1918, IINE is one of the region’s largest and oldest service providers for new Americans. The International Institute serves 2,000 refugees and immigrants each year and has launched new programs to double the number of newcomers served to 4,000 within five years. In the past year, staff in our Boston, Lowell, and Manchester (NH) field offices provided resettlement, family reunification, education, career assistance, and legal services to people from 67 different countries. As the United States engages in a pitched debate about immigration policy, our work is critical to preserving the nation’s tradition of welcoming people of all backgrounds who cherish freedom, equality and hard work. IINE’s programs are particularly important to New England, which has a notable dependence on immigrant labor to grow its economy.

“I feel free,” Sindy Micourt, who fled Haiti and arrived in Boston a year ago, told The Boston Globe. She is one of the Haitian immigrants hired by Thrive Support and Advocacy to provide care for and teach skills to people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Refugees and immigrants fleeing violence, persecution, and food insecurity arrive in the U.S. with the hope of building a better life. Like Micourt, they want to work and contribute to their communities, and we need them to fill much-needed jobs. Faced with a growing need of support for refugees, between 1985-1994, the International Institute of Boston’s (IIB) small but mighty team rallied together to welcome newcomers fleeing conflicts around the world. The agency also expanded its immigration legal services to reunite families and integrate them into our nation, connected clients with mental health support, and grew community ties through its volunteer program. 📜 Learn more about this decade, where so many refugees and immigrants became new Bostonians, in the third installment of our series, “100 Years of Welcome: Commemorating IINE’s Boston Centennial.” Read the blog: https://hubs.li/Q02RzJ-b0 #immigrantswelcome #refugeeswelcome #bostoncentennial #IINEBostonCentennial #100yearsofwelcome #IINEBoston100

The International Institute of New England (IINE) condemns the recent escalation in xenophobic and racist narratives about Haitian asylum seekers and refugees. Political opinions and the freedom to express them does not justify violent rhetoric. The community of Springfield, Ohio, has been terrorized by bomb threats and other violence spurred on by false claims and accusations from politicians who hope to hold the highest offices in our nation. These are not the morals of Americans who in our experience want to welcome newcomers in communities across the country. The nation is watching how Massachusetts responds to this rhetoric. Let’s remind the country that we are a nation of immigrants, and we are stronger because of our rich diversity. At IINE, we echo Ohio Governor DeWine’s recent comments. “Springfield has a rich history of providing refuge for the oppressed and being a place of opportunity... The Springfield I know is not the one you hear about in social media rumors. It is a city made up of good, decent, welcoming people. They are hard workers — both those who were born in this country and those who settled here.” — Ohio Governor DeWine in The New York Times. Join Haitians of Boston and countless organizations working alongside Haitian immigrants to show the Haitian community and the nation that we welcome newcomers here in Massachusetts. #JusticeforHaiti #yestoUnity #YestoSolidarity #YestoJustice #SolidaritywithHaitianimmigrants #ImmigrantsWelcome #welcomehaitians #haitianswelcome

This #WelcomingWeek2024, we honor leaders who advocate on behalf of refugees and immigrants and create safe spaces for them to belong. As the daughter of working-class Haitian immigrants, Boston City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune has demonstrated unwavering commitment to serving her community and tackling issues impacting immigrants and new arrivals. We are thankful for her support and for speaking to our clients on World Refugee Day and sharing her own family’s story. Recently inducted to the Lowell 100, a group of leaders who have made significant contributions to the city’s immigrant communities, SIDNEY L. Liang, MPA, CHW, Lowell Community Health Center's Metta Health Center Senior Director has demonstrated incredible commitment to refugees and immigrants. Liang, one of the many Cambodian refugees who arrived in Lowell to escape the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s and 1980s, has dedicated his career to providing health care to refugees and immigrants living in the Greater Lowell area. We thank him for his dedication. Originally from Fatundu, a small town in province of Bandundu, Democratic Republic of Congo, Founder and CEO of Victory Women of Vision Mary Ngwanda Georges has built her career empowering refugees and immigrant families. We thank Georges and Victory Women of Vision for being an incredible partner, assisting refugees with case management support, medical appointments, and domestic violence referrals and counseling. Thank you for your dedication and leadership! #WelcomingWeek #WelcomingWeek2024 #welcomingcommunities #welcomingimmigrants #immigrantswelcome #immigrantswelcomehere #refugeeswelcome #wereallinthistogether #wereallin

Everyone has the right to seek asylum ⚖️ For Welcoming America's #WelcomingWeek2024, we highlight our recent field visit to the U.S.-Mexico Border, as part of a joint project with U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants (USCRI) called “Las Mariposas de la Frontera,” to document how recent changes to asylum processing have affected those seeking asylum. IINE President and CEO Jeff Thielman, SVP & Chief Advancement Officer Alexandra Weber, and USCRI Senior Policy Analyst Aaron Nodjomian-Escajeda heard from organizations and directly from asylum seekers, who faced increased targeting due to the recent policy changes. They heard about cartels, human smugglers, and other criminal organizations preying on asylum seekers caught up in the new system. U.S. asylum policies now place families, black migrants and LGBTQIA+ asylum seekers in further harm. The right to seek asylum should not be conditional and place those seeking safety and a better life at risk. Join us to #saveasylum and uplift the voices of asylum seekers: https://lnkd.in/exzjEk7X #WelcomingWeek #WelcomingWeek2024 #welcomingcommunities #welcomingimmigrants #immigrantswelcome #immigrantswelcomehere #refugeeswelcome #wereallinthistogether #wereallin #mariposasdelafrontera #uplifttheirvoices #saveasylum

Congratulations to IINE Resettlement Services Manager Farishta, who received her U.S. citizenship in August! 🎉 Farishta first arrived in U.S. in 2019 from Afghanistan and started the process to receive her citizenship with our Legal Services team in February 2024. “It is like a dream come true. It is the biggest day of my life,” said Farishta. “After all the problems and long journey, finally I achieved what I wished for. I am also so glad that I am working in such wonderful environments and supporting refugees to achieve the goals of their life.” Farishta works at IINE's Lowell office, welcoming fellow refugees and immigrants to the community. This Welcoming America's #WelcomingWeek2024 on #CitizenshipDay, we congratulate all who have worked extremely hard to become U.S. citizens 🇺🇸⭐ Read the blog to learn more about Farishta's journey: https://hubs.li/Q02Q2TBY0 #WelcomingWeek #WelcomingWeek2024 #welcomingcommunities #welcomingimmigrants #immigrantswelcome #immigrantswelcomehere #refugeeswelcome #wereallinthistogether #wereallin #uscitizens #uscitizenship #newamericans

Working together 🤝 For Welcoming America's #WelcomingWeek2024, we thank local employment partners who provide opportunities for refugees and immigrants to succeed and contribute to their communities. In March, our Employment team in Lowell drove several clients to talk to Kimball Farm to speak with hiring managers and present their resumes. Several clients were hired, including two Syrian refugee brothers, Momo and Anas. “They have been such an incredible addition to our team. We largely communicate with them in English and only break out the translator app on occasion...If either of these gentlemen need references in the future please do not hesitate to ask,” shared Kimball Farm Director of Food and Beverage Stephen Castro about the brothers’ progress. With partners like Kimball Farm, we can all work to welcome refugees and immigrants and fill much-needed jobs across New England. #WelcomingWeek #WelcomingWeek2024 #welcomingcommunities #welcomingimmigrants #immigrantswelcome #immigrantswelcomehere #refugeeswelcome #wereallinthistogether #wereallin

IINE takes strong exception to legislation signed today by Governor Sununu to ostensibly tighten voter ID laws. There is virtually no evidence that non-citizens are voting in elections, and it is already the law that only U.S. citizens can vote. Signing this bill fuels the demonization of immigrants for political gain and further divides our country. These hateful and false narratives misrepresent and endanger immigrants, who are desperately needed to fill thousands of open positions in the New Hampshire workforce and who have fled persecution and violence in pursuit of a better life in the U.S. Learn more: https://hubs.li/Q02PTkqK0 #usimmigration #immigrantswelcome #voterlaws #voterid
