As the industry seeks to expand broadband access and modernize the grid, leveraging cloud solutions is essential for efficient and safe operations. Traditional methods of pole data collection and management lead to delays and errors, creating communication breakdowns among joint-use project stakeholders. Cloud-based workflows offer a solution by enabling: 1. Rapid data uploads to a centralized platform 2. Data accessibility 3. Streamlined analysis 4. Error reduction 5. Integration with existing systems Thanks to Spencer Hankin for sharing his insights! https://lnkd.in/gGTBU6jQ

The issue of double wood (aka buddy poles, ghost poles) has become a growing concern in many communities across the country. They can linger for years without being removed, leading to safety hazards, issues between utility companies and joint-use attachers, and significant public frustration. Local officials, utility companies, and residents have expressed concerns about the impacts of these poles, with efforts being made to address the problem through both legislative and logistical means. Properly addressing double wood starts with accurate records, but in-field inspections and time and labor intensive. John J. Simmins, PhD shares his perspective on the issue and a new solution: https://lnkd.in/gjEjDnwC

We received lots of great questions from the audience during our last Ask the #NESC Expert webinar. Here’s one we didn’t have the chance to answer live. Our next webinar with IKE experts Grant Glaus, P.E. and Malcolm Young, PE is coming up soon: https://lnkd.in/gmtPS3iu Q: What is the required clearance between a distribution line and a transmission line? A: Clearances between lines carried on different supporting structures (the Code term for poles or lattice towers) are found in NESC Rule 233. For voltages above 22KV to ground, a clearance adder needs to be calculated according to Rule 233C. McGraw-Hill’s NESC Handbook by David Marne shows a good example of calculating the clearance adder and required total clearance.

Double wood (aka "ghost pole," "buddy pole,” or “stump”) are abandoned utility poles that remain after equipment transfers. They pose safety risks and liabilities, create an eyesore for the public, and complicate utility management. Delays in removal stem from challenging coordination among multiple utility companies, communication breakdowns, ownership changes, and unclear responsibilities. In-field inspections are the most common way to locate instances of double wood or validate existing records, but they are time-consuming and resource-intensive. IKE Insight's new Double Wood Detective helps efficiently detect and validate double wood at a network level. By automating detection and improving record-keeping, it helps maintain a reliable electrical grid and ensure public safety. https://lnkd.in/gjEjDnwC

Processes involving pole data and analysis are often manual, time-consuming, and error prone. Our team has been focused on two such tasks: 1️⃣ Double wood detection: Whatever you call it - double wood, buddy poles, ghost pole - it's a prevalent issue for many utilities. Lagging pole transfers, backlogs, and communication gaps between pole owners and attachers are some of the common reasons they arise. When unaddressed, double wood creates a safety hazard and a liability, not to mention an eyesore for the public and a nuisance for property owners. Field inspections are the most common way to identify double wood instances, but they are time intensive and costly. 2️⃣ NJUNS ticketing: The National Joint Utilities Notification system (NJUNS) provides an important platform for communication and work coordination between pole owners and attachers. But manually creating, updating, and closing out tickets is an operational burden. For many organizations, this leads to a growing backlog of unprocessed tickets, putting them at risk with contractual or regulatory obligations and creating liabilities stemming from unsent tickets. We recently announced the launch of two new advanced analytics that leverage existing pole data and imagery to automate double wood detection and joint-use ticket creation and delivery. 👉 Double Wood Detective from IKE Insight identifies or validates double wood instances at a network-level using street-level imagery. 👉 Joint-Use Ticket Automation from IKE Insight uses natural language and pole-specific AI capabilities to automatically populate NJUNS ticket fields using an organization's data sets. https://lnkd.in/gfw2_qkZ
