  • Illinois has long played a significant role in the fight for civil rights. From protesting housing discrimination in Chicago’s North Shore, to the student-led movement at Southern Illinois University to end segregation, to Dr. King’s 1965 speech in Springfield on the labor rights movement, and much more, Illinoisans joined Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the fight for racial, social, and economic justice. This week Tryce Prince, from the sociology department at the University of Illinois at Chicago joined the IDHS Office of Strategy, Equity, and Transformation to highlight this history and uplift the role of community and storytelling. "It is important that we wrestle with our experiences, but it is also important that we do so in community. What's your story? Who are you sharing it with? Who are you listening to? Those are questions I hope we can begin thinking about and continue thinking about as we face discouraging times,” said Prince.
