People often ask what a treasurer does. While our office oversees the state’s financial portfolio, we also manage multiple programs that grow our economy and strengthen our communities. Watch Treasurer Frerichs explain our office’s role and philosophy at a City Club of Chicago event with RockCreek Founder and CEO Afsaneh Beschloss, who also served as the The World Bank Chief Investment Officer.

Treasurer Frerichs’ recent trip to the Metro East showcased the work that keeps Illinois strong. The National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center (NCERC) at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is a nationally recognized lab dedicated to developing biotechnologies. Over the last 20 years, the Center has helped commercialize more than 80 products, create more than 5,000 jobs, and generate $5.6 billion in annual revenue.

Places like Urban Autism Solutions' Growing Solutions Farm keep our communities thriving! This 1.2-acre urban produce farm in Chicago helps transitioning high school students with Autism build vocational skills through work experience. Students learn how to harvest and prepare food for sale at farm stands, restaurants and wholesalers. Proceeds from the Farm’s CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program are reinvested in the vocational program. As part of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Treasurer Frerichs and the Illinois ABLE team visited to learn about the program and help with harvesting. Diversity is one of Illinois’ greatest strengths, and we reflect that diversity in our team, asset managers, and portfolio. We’ve committed to representing Hispanic and Latino Illinoisians with initiatives like: ▪️ $2.2 billion brokered with Latino-owned firms ▪️ $693 million managed by Latino-owned firms ▪️ 79% of assets brokered with diverse firms in the last fiscal year, a total of $45 billion ▪️ An investment that helped launch Chicago’s first Latina-led venture capital firm, Chingona Ventures ▪️ A Spanish-language ICash site, built from the ground-up without Google Translate. Thank you to the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for inviting us to your 2024 Conference and Expo and including Treasurer Frerichs in the lineup of incredible speakers.

Diversity is not an “and/or” discussion. It’s simply good business. The research is clear: diverse teams improve decision-making, innovation, and productivity—increasing shareholder value. Our annual Diversity in Investments Forum brings together investment professionals to advance conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion. Thank you to Loyola University Chicago for hosting us and to Derrick Collins of Chicago State University for your keynote address. We also want to thank the panelists and moderators who offered their wisdom and perspectives. #Diversity #DiversityinBusiness #InvestmentDiversity

Treasurer is perhaps the least understood job in state government. Thankfully, organizations like the City Club of Chicago give us a chance to explain our work and its impact. Treasurer Frerichs and RockCreek Founder and CEO Afsaneh Mashayekhi Beschloss recently discussed how programs like the Illinois Growth and Innovation Fund are helping attract and retain talent in our state.

Illinois has made tremendous strides in recent years. We’ve balanced the budget, increased our credit rating by nine points, gone from one of the nation’s lowest-performing 529 college savings plans to one of the best, and made investments that will grow our economy. But the work is not over, and rebuilding trust takes time. I sat down with Bloomberg to discuss these successes.

At the National Association of State Treasurer’s (NAST) annual conference, Treasurer Frerichs sat down with Chicago Federal Reserve President and CEO Austan Goolsbee. Their conversation revolved around unemployment, inflation, interest rates, and of course, Goolsbee’s “Funniest Celebrity in DC” title. Read the article and see why Goolsbee predicts more interest rate cuts this year.
