In the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, veterinarians and biomedical scientists are collaborating across disciplines on the most critical concerns arising at the intersection of human, animal, and environmental health. Rebecca Smith, a professor of epidemiology, focuses on infectious disease surveillance, forecasting, and control within a One Health framework. She develops mathematical models to study disease transmission at the human-animal-environment interface, particularly in vector-borne, water-borne, and zoonotic diseases. A key member of the SHIELD Team, Dr. Smith helped develop the saliva-based COVID-19 test that enabled schools and businesses to safely reopen early in the pandemic. She also co-leads a multidisciplinary project on wastewater monitoring to detect infectious diseases like COVID-19 and potential future pathogens. Dr. Smith is also a member of the 2024–25 Emerging Research Leaders Academy. As IHSI celebrates 10 years of health at #Illinois, we are featuring health researchers and innovators from many of the disciplines and perspectives across campus that come together to address personal, public, and planetary health challenges. How is AI transforming aging care services? Are older adults ready to embrace this technological revolution? On Wednesday at noon via Zoom, School of Social Work, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign's Xiayu Summer Chen will explore the transformative role of AI-led Conversational Agents in aging care, dive into the acceptance of these emerging technologies among older adults, and tackle ethical and privacy concerns. Chen, a PhD candidate whose research interests include aging and technology and health and mental health disparities among older adults, with a particular focus on the Asian and immigrant community, is a research assistant in the College of Applied Health Sciences at Illinois' Human Factors Aging Lab with Prof. Wendy Rogers. Register for Zoom details: https://lnkd.in/gcHA4MrR This webinar is part of the Community Seminar Series (CSS). The CSS is cohosted by IHSI and University of Illinois Extension to provide research-based health information to the residents of Illinois and beyond. Congrats to the ASAP Team! Innovative approaches like like these are critical for a healthier planet and a more sustainable food system.
Associate Dean for Research, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Last year, we hired an amazing cohort of new faculty working on climate impacts, risks, and inequality from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. (More on the cohort soon!) One of these stellar faculty - Tracy Lawson has teamed up with our very own Andrew Leakey to lead the Alliance for Socially-acceptable and Actionable Plants (ASAP) Global Center. We're so excited about it, and it's yet another example of campus and Liberal Arts & Sciences at Illinois leadership in climate and sustainability solutions. https://lnkd.in/gbquJCZ7

Great research AND mentorship happening here at #Illinois. Learn more about Prof. Grant: https://lnkd.in/g5qy62cK
Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
Cholera is a deadly diarrheal disease that, as a pandemic of inequity, infects 1.5 million people annually in developing countries. In my lab at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, we take a systems level approach to understand how the pathogen that causes cholera evolves and to identify novel therapeutic strategies to treat and prevent infections. To this end, first year graduate students rotating in my lab are using wax worms as a model to investigate fundamental questions. I’m excited to see the discoveries made in my group!
