Family Health is the primary care division of the Mobile County Health Department. On Wednesday, the Women’s Center at 248 Cox Street in Mobile hosted its first breast cancer awareness lunch and learn to conclude Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Zsaree Sewell, the clinic administrator, said breast cancer is the most common cancer for women worldwide. It is estimated that 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and an estimated 2,470 men are diagnosed with breast cancer each year. “This educational luncheon allowed us to educate the community regarding the importance of preventative care and early detection,” Ms. Sewell said. “Dr. Christen Altermatt presented on many issues centered around breast cancer, such as the risk factors, the importance of early detection and mammograms, valuable resources and lifestyle modifications. “We honored our very own Nina Drake, who is a breast cancer survivor. Nina works as security for the Women’s Center. We hope to continue to raise awareness by educating the community through events such as this.” For more information on how to schedule your yearly wellness visit, call 251-690-8889.
