EU funded project which aims to understand how micro and nano-plastic particles (MNPs) impact human health.

About us

A consortium consisting of 12 partners from 8 European countries will investigate the complex role of micro and nanoplastics combined with environmental contaminants on food safety and human health, focusing on allergy and asthma. MNPs are out in the environment and part of our everyday life. They are in the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe, yet we do not know how dangerous they are to human health. Some of the project’s goals will be to determine the types and quantitates of MNPs in specific environments, identify the sorts of contaminants that attach to them and evaluate where they wind-up in our bodies after inhaling and ingesting them. These results will help us understand the effects of microplastics on human health and provide crucial knowledge for legislators.

🌟 Breaking News: The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics!🌟 We're excited to share that John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton have just been awarded the #NobelPrize in Physics for their groundbreaking discoveries that laid the foundation for #MachineLearning using artificial neural networks. These technologies, inspired by how the human brain works, are powering everything from the images we see online to AI-assisted medical diagnoses. And guess what? Our #Imptox project is working on exactly this! 💡 By integrating a custom-trained artificial neural network into the open-source software #GEPARD, we're revolutionizing how we detect and analyze microplastics and nanoplastics—those tiny fragments polluting our oceans, air, and even our bodies 🌊. With #MachineLearning, we’ve made the detection process faster, more accurate, and adaptable to different types of samples. Our neural network can now identify the shape, size, and composition of microplastics more efficiently than traditional methods. In fact, we can detect 15% more particles compared to older techniques! 🤯 This is a huge step forward for both science and the environment. #AI and #Sustainability working hand in hand to tackle global challenges. 💪🌱 #NobelPhysics #NeuralNetworks #Imptox #ArtificialIntelligence #Innovation #Microplastics #Sustainability
