10 Mistakes PMP Aspirants Make We’ve had so many conversations with my students about their PMP journeys, and let me tell you — the struggles are real. Let’s Talk About Them! 1. Going for the Cheapest Training I know, saving costs is tempting. But trust me, like I told Sarah, investing in quality training is the best way to set yourself up for success. Cheap options often mean low-quality content — and you deserve better! 2. Using Too Many Resources Ever felt overwhelmed by all the PMP books and courses out there? Colin, one of my recent students, faced this too. We streamlined his approach, and it made all the difference. Focus on a few high-quality resources to stay on track. 3. No Deadline in Sight Does this sound familiar? "I’ll take the exam when I’m ready." Well, without a deadline, it’s easy to keep pushing it. Abdullah set his date, and it kept him motivated — and guess what? He passed on his first attempt! 4. Inconsistent Study Habits Lisa, like many others, tried to cram everything over weekends and take breaks during the week. It wasn’t working. We switched her to a consistent daily routine, and the results spoke for themselves. Consistency really is key. 5. Skipping Mock Tests A lot of people tell me they don’t feel “ready” to attempt mock tests. But avoiding them only means missing out on valuable practice. Monica shared that taking quality mock tests was her turning point — it built her confidence and familiarity with the exam format. 6. Relying on Free Mock Tests I can’t stress this enough — not all mock tests are created equal. Free versions may not match the real exam’s difficulty. Sarah found this out and switched to reliable sources, which truly reflected the PMP style. 7. Skipping Timed Practice Sessions Knowing the material is great, but can you manage your time under pressure? Timed sessions helped Colin stay calm during his exam. It’s a game-changer! 8. Dragging Prep Beyond 30 Days Extending your preparation too long can actually dilute your focus. Abdullah initially stretched his study plan, but we restructured it into a 30-day sprint, and it kept him sharp and engaged. 9. Relying on Memorization The PMP isn’t about cramming. It’s about understanding. Phillips realized this and switched her approach to truly grasp the concepts, which made all the difference during her situational questions. 10. Lack of Sleep Before Exam Day Ever tried pulling an all-nighter before a big day? Spoiler alert: it backfires! Naveen initially planned to do this, but after a chat, she prioritized rest — and she aced her exam with a fresh mind! These mistakes are common — but the good news? They’re all fixable.
