About us
Welcome to InDEPTH, the only English-speaking magazine on the planet dedicated to technical and mission-oriented diving. Our mission is to provide readers with compelling, depth full information prepared by leading experts in the field, in order to increase their knowledge and understanding of diving, with the goal of expanding our collective underwater envelope. Think of it as the journal for the hyperbaric intelligentsia, written by the hyperbaric intelligentsia! In parallel, we help our supporting brands reach and engage with the global tech marketplace. InDEPTH is unique in both the breadth and depth of its spirited, monthly online stories, which cover the latest developments in diving safety, technology, training, diving physiology and medicine, human factors, exploration projects, diving culture, history, community and art. We also offer monthly surveys in a feature called, “It’s the Data, Stupid.” Readers who sign up for a free subscription receive a weekly email with current and curated stories. InDEPTH is a partnership of Global Underwater Explorers (GUE) and Michael Menduno, founder and former Editor-in-chief of now defunct aquaCORPS: The Journal for Technical Diving (1990-1996). It is intended as GUE’s contribution or “give-back” to the global diving community, and should not be confused with its membership magazine, QUEST.

𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗩𝗶𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗪𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗦𝘂𝗯-𝗦𝘁. 𝗟𝗮𝘄𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 Shipwreck explorers Sébastien Pelletier, who also serves as editor-in-chief of En Profondeur, joins up with Kevin Brown to report on their 2021 expedition to the St. Lawrence Estuary, where they discovered two virgin wrecks; the barge Donnacona no. 1 that sank in 1942, and what they believe to be is the Otter, a two-masted schooner, which sank in 1898. In the process, they struggled with challenging conditions and Brown was nearly lost at sea. Exploration ain’t for the faint of heart. 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗣𝘂𝗿𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲: 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗹𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 Ken Stewart has found purpose in going underwater. In addition to training over 500 young black and brown divers, his organization, Diving With A Purpose (DWP), which has been featured in NatGeo, ABC, CNN, NBC, Smithsonian and the Washington Post, has helped locate and document the wrecks of 18 slave ships in six countries with DWP volunteers and its government and university partners. DWP has also created practical programs to train future maritime archeologists and conservationists, as scuba storyteller Gil Zeimer explains. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘆𝗺𝗯𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘀: 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘀 Pioneering Swiss cave explorer and inventor Olivier Isler shares his latest creation—a unique, lightweight 10kg/22 lb closed circuit rebreather, dubbed Hydrophilis, which enables him to swim freely in the wild. "More than fifteen years ago, I had a beautiful dream in which I was swimming peacefully among whales and dolphins. When I woke up, I told myself that, with a mini diving apparatus, I could potentially make this dream come true. The idea of the Hydrophilis was born. I successfully tested the current prototype—the third version since the first concept in 2009—in May 2023, fourteen years later! This year, I tweaked the helmet’s buoyancy and the shape of the visor to enhance the field of vision."
