  • Celebrating the Success of IHB's Native Youth Health Fair and Back-to-School Event Yesterday at the Indian Health Board's Native Youth Health Fair and Back-to-School event, we had over 170 attendees and more than 50 children receive back-to-school checkups! Highlights included hoop dancing led by the Sampson Brothers, IHB's Big Drum group with Freddie LoneEagle, and musical expression supported by Rock the Rez. Our dedicated IHB teams from Diabetes, C&S, IBH, DVP, MNSure, and Sexual Health did a great job with health education, fun activities and bringing in the resources--15 community organizations contributing to the event with special thanks to Jellycat, Seward Co-op, Bellweather Media and others for generous donations. Many people think dementia is just a normal part of aging – but it’s not. Lifestyle choices and behaviors can influence the chances of developing Alzheimer’s and other dementias. Many of these factors are linked to heart health and other chronic conditions, including high blood pressure, lack of physical activity, being overweight, diabetes, depression, smoking, hearing impairment, and excessive alcohol consumption. Most of these risk factors occur more often in American Indian and Alaska Native populations. It's never too late to learn how to break old habits and embrace new ones! Adopting healthier habits now may help you lower the risk of dementia or delay its progression. Check out this list of healthy habits from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and learn more about reducing your risks: bit.ly/44Whi7c. Together, let's #ENDALZ!

The difference between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease can be confusing. During Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month, you can learn and share. Dementia is an umbrella term used for a condition or illness in which a person has difficulty with memory, finding words, solving problems, behavior changes, and other thinking abilities. Alzheimer’s is the most common type of dementia, and you hear about “plaques and tangles.” There are many others, including: · Vascular Dementia - Results from conditions that damage blood vessels or blood flow in and leading to the brain. · Lewy Body Dementia - Caused by abnormal “Lewy body” proteins that affect chemical messengers. · Frontotemporal Dementia - A rare type that often affects people under 60. · Mixed Dementia - A combination of two or more types of dementia. Researchers are studying how the different types of dementia start and affect each other to help develop improved prevention, treatment, and care strategies. Here’s some science behind the dementia types: bit.ly/3WUXgIl National Institute on Aging (NIA) #ENDALZ

  • We recently had the chance to discuss the Indian Health Board’s new initiative — the Menaandawiwe Wellness Campus — with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, Council Member Jamal Osman, the Minneapolis Planning Commission, Seward Neighborhood Group and others. Their understanding and support are invaluable as we expand our comprehensive healthcare and Indigenous services for our American Indian community in the Twin Cities. We appreciate their engagement in supporting culturally aware healthcare. #MyIHB #Menaandawiwe
