  • Moi University students Victor Kiplagat and Olivia Watta spent a whirlwind six weeks at the IU School of Nursing earlier this academic year as part of the first bilateral student exchange between the two universities. During their time in the United States, Victor and Olivia shared about their nursing school experiences in Kenya with current IU nursing students while participating in simulation, clinical, and professional development opportunities at the IU School of Nursing's Indianapolis, Bloomington, and Fort Wayne campuses. Both say they're determined to take insights they learned during their visit – like wound infection prevention, the concept of a student-run clinic, and the mixture of concerned patient care and self-care for effective nursing – and make a difference in Kenya's nursing profession. • IU School of Nursing's Dr. Bethany Murray presented research and participated in an Ignite Talk during IU Bloomington's Faculty Academy for Excellence in Teaching (FACET) and the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning's "Celebration of Teaching" earlier this month. The Celebration of Teaching showcases IU Bloomington's commitment to student success and the evidence-based teaching that supports it. During the event, Dr. Murray presented her evaluation of transformational learning of prelicensure nursing students through a study-abroad experience in Kenya. Dr. Murray's research showed students were significantly impacted and experienced transformation in compassion and cultural humility as a result of the experience. Overall, nine themes emerged from narrative data provided by the students who participated in the program, including self-actualization as a human being; nursing identity development; critical thinking skills; nursing educational models; relationships with care partners; learning about other cultures; language and communication; social determinants of health; and resource management.
