    In a new advisory report, U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy is sounding the alarm on the realities of parenting today, revealing just how dire the situation is for millions of parents of children under 18. In his report, Murthy cites a bleak statistic issued by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 2023: 41% of parents say that most days they are so stressed they cannot function and 48% call their stress “completely overwhelming.” #parenting #workingparents

    On August 28th, the U.S. Surgeon General issued a public health warning about the overwhelming stress parents are facing today. Nearly half of all parents (48%) report feeling "completely overwhelmed" by stress on most days, as highlighted by the American Psychological Association. This isn’t just everyday stress — it’s a debilitating weight that leaves many feeling unable to focus, disconnected, and misunderstood. Modern parenting has become more challenging than ever. Beyond the typical struggles of balancing sleep, work, and family needs, parents now face a broken childcare system, battles over screen time, rising mental health issues in teens, and constant fears of gun violence. This isn’t business as usual—it's a public health crisis. The impact of this stress goes beyond mental strain. Prolonged stress contributes to cardiovascular illness, weakens the immune system, and leads to declining mental health for both parents and children. As a society, we need to recognize the toll that parenting takes and provide better support. We need paid family leave, affordable childcare, and robust mental health resources to ensure parents are healthy enough to raise thriving children.     As mothers, we’re constantly told that exhaustion is just part of the job. Society normalizes the relentless fatigue, framing it as something we signed up for when we became parents. We’re expected to push through, smile, and carry on — because “all mothers are tired.” But what if that exhaustion is telling us something more? What if it’s not just a side effect of motherhood, but a signal that something deeper is happening in our bodies? In an article published in Motherly®, DeeDee Andrews shares her experience living with the belief that her extreme fatigue was just part of being a mom. For six long years, she pushed through, unaware that she was actually battling a chronic illness — severe anemia caused by undiagnosed adenomyosis. It wasn’t until after her hysterectomy that she finally realized her exhaustion wasn’t "normal" — it was a sign of something much more serious. Those six years took a toll, costing her countless precious moments with her children as she struggled to keep up. This experience highlights the societal narrative that too often dismisses maternal exhaustion as simply part of motherhood, masking underlying health issues.     Breast cancer affects millions of people all around the world. It's a diagnosis that no one wants to hear, and not only does it disrupt the life of the person diagnosed but ripples through entire families and communities. Whether it’s a mother, sister, daughter, or friend, almost all of us know someone who has faced this incredibly difficult battle. It’s a reality that far too many people face. But it’s not just about the numbers or statistics. It's about the countless stories of strength, resilience, and sometimes loss. It's about the overwhelming uncertainty that comes with treatment decisions, the exhaustion of enduring therapies, and the silent anxiety about what the future holds. Yet, in the face of these challenges, there is hope. With early detection, the chance of survival increases significantly. Regular screenings and self-exams can make a massive difference. Advancements in research and treatment (like targeted therapies, immunotherapy, and personalized care) are improving outcomes by giving people more options for recovery.
