35 years of PROFIBUS: Field-Tested Installation Tips - Part 7 Returning this week to our PROFIBUS anniversary series, we want to share our PROFIBUS installation tips for success! Over the decades, we've gathered valuable insights into PROFIBUS installation. These insights are summarized in our specifications and the Installation Guidelines of PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI) and should help you to make your PROFIBUS networks more reliable and efficient. Here are key tips to enhance your PROFIBUS networks' reliability and efficiency: ➡ Device Limit: A maximum of 32 devices are permitted per segment, including a repeater. ➡ Network Structure: A star-shaped bus structure is generally recommended, as any faults that occur in a line structure affect all segments/the entire master system. In addition, laying the PROFIBUS cables parallel to the equipotential bonding ensures that the cable shields are not unnecessarily stressed by equalizing currents. ➡ Cabling: The minimum cable length between two devices should not be less than one meter. Use only PROFIBUS cable type A. Maximum lengths vary by baud rate. ➡ Measuring Points: Install measuring points at the beginning and end of each segment, which also double as terminating resistors to prevent signal reflections. ➡ Bus Connectors: Use only PROFIBUS connectors with PG sockets for consistent measurement capability. ➡ Network Monitoring: We recommend setting retry limits to "5" and alarm levels to "2" in monitoring systems.
