  • Business ownership runs in my Family! My Great Grandfather, Otto List Immigrated to the US from Germany in 1929. He was a Mason and worked in a Slaughterhouse for two years while learning English. Once he was accepted for his trade he was one of the best Bricklayers in Madison, Wisconsin during the 1930’s and early 1940’s. He worked his hands to the bone and eventually built his own Tavern with my Great Grandmother; “Club List” I take pride in my Roots and work ethic, he was Born in The State of Saxony, Germany in 1890. Being apart of the Prussian empire he volunteered for the Forst World War in early 1915. He was with the 66th Reserve Infantry Regiment at the Battle of Verdun (1916), The Somme Offensive (1916) and The Battle of Cambrai (1917). Sometime in 1917 he was transferred to the 232nd Reserve Infantry Regiment where he participated in the German Spring Offensive and finished the War fighting in the Muesse-Argonne Sector. Throughout the war he was wounded three separate times and started as a lower enlisted. He was Promoted sometime between March and May of 1918 to an Officer in the Imperial Prussian (German) Army. His last hospital stay for was 56 days due to wounds sustained on May 15th from Artillery fire. Shrapnel and “Fine Wooden Splinters” in his right shoulder. He went back to the Front Everytime he was healed. Him and his Tavern were the targets of Mcarthyism and subsequently burned down not once, but twice. He rebuilt everytime until failing health in the 1960’s stopped his Buisness. Whenever I have a bad day I often remind myself: “My Tavern didn’t burn down” and it gives me the perspective to keep moving ahead. Stubbornness and adversity have been apart of my family for generations. Being a Business Owner is not easy but I would not have it any other way. My business operates in memory of my Great Grandfather, a truly extraordinary individual. I’m grateful to have come from his lineage, everyday. Otto August List 1890-1968
