Industrial Microbes is honored to receive a Distributed Bioindustrial Manufacturing Program award. We applaud the DoD's dedication to advancing bioindustrial manufacturing. We are preparing to establish a commercial-scale facility to convert ethanol feedstock into acrylic acid, a versatile component used in coatings, adhesives, sealants, lubricants, corrosion inhibitors, and wound dressings. This initiative aligns with our mission to innovate and scale sustainable biomanufacturing solutions. As we reflect on 2023, our founder Derek Greenfield shared learnings on scale-up in industrial biotech.
The Alternative Fuels & Chemicals Coalition conference pushed biotech companies to share their challenges and learnings. That is why I was delighted to join a panel organized by Jim Barber. The other speakers John R. Shaw, Eric Steen, Darcy Prather, and Kristian Gubsch shared their learnings on scaling sustainable industrial biotech processes; here are some of my favorite takeaways: -The focus needs to be on solutions for customers, not on ingredients. -As you scale up a process, keep asking: how is it going to fail? And design your process to address potential failure modes. -Don’t just compete with existing petro ingredients, find where your ingredient has unique properties that solve customer problems. -Get to a scale where customers can test your product as quickly as possible -Don’t give samples away for free. Asking customers to pay will generate useful discussions. And if you're a strain engineer or analytical scientist, iMicrobes is hiring!
