EPA reports over 20,000 drinking water and 50,000 wastewater permit violations a year or about 2% of our systems have serious quality issues. This may not sound like a lot in % but it can be huge in lives impacted. There is hope! Using modern technology such as sensors and machine learning software utilities are able to get more of their plants then ever before. Cuxhaven Germany - used machine learning to improve energy usage by 30%. El Paso Texas - Is doing more reuse and using sensors and software to find contaminants BEFORE they hit the treatment plant. Yorkshire Water United Kingdom - Is using embedded sensors to detect faults in giant screw pumps before failure. https://lnkd.in/gPyFKNSb

The grey wave has already arrived in the water space and its impact is already up close in the water space. Once these people leave the industry and retire, they typically take decades of institutional knowledge with them. Something as simple as knowing exactly where that hidden water valve is under the pavement can make a big difference during a pipeline break. https://lnkd.in/g4H2prBi
Is your institutional water knowledge walking out the door?

You need a utility technology framework in place. The framework includes multiple components (Equipment, Software, and Services) and the utility’s existing system (People, Processes, Infrastructure). Each component works together to enable the utility to achieve their goals to monitor and operate their systems using today’s information, not yesterdays. How is your team using using AI Chat agents? What helps us out is to take years of data such as city council meetings and use that to help the AI Chat agent with content. See below for an example using City of Houston 5 years of council minutes and training the model on that. Now if someone on the team wants to know more about the Northeast Water Purification Plant, the largest water plant under construction in the world! They can ask here for the history, current contracts, goals, etc. about the project. Pretty helpful!
