Our artistic director Zhailon Levingston is once again reinterpreting inherited text for right now. Zhailon co-directed “Cats: The Jellicle Ball,” an off-Broadway production at Perelman Performing Arts Center (PAC NYC) celebrating the legacy of queer ballroom in a reimagined version of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical. We couldn’t be more proud! Check out his full interview on Good Morning America: https://lnkd.in/e6jnP_n4
About us
Inheritance Theater Project (ITP) builds relationships across religious, racial, and generational divides through collaborative playmaking. The company is led by a team of national artists who partner with local artists, educators, and clergy to engage in a process that uses theater and shared cultural touchstones to bridge divides and build community. The process culminates in an original piece of theater by and for the residents of that city, but it is the act of creating this work that builds strong, more interconnected communities. Since 2015, ITP has employed 200+ artists to engage 11,000+ people in 15 cities across the U.S. ITP has worked in communities where issues like refugee resettlement (Omaha), housing discrimination (Norfolk), and impending climate disasters (Palm Beach) have led to neighbors operating in silos and, at times, conflict. By inviting people to co-create art about these challenging topics, ITP increases empathy and creates new durable connections that continue to serve the community for years to come.

We are thrilled to share that Inheritance Theater Project has been approved for an award from the National Endowment for the Arts! These funds will support our upcoming project in Chicago, starting this fall. Chicago kicks off our national Civic Series and will explore the relationship of the South & West sides of the city to the First Amendment and the local impact of rights to expression, assembly, and faith. We're honored to be among over 1,000 other organizations receiving awards for their contributions to the arts in America. Join the NEA in supporting this project by donating at https://lnkd.in/ekv4MSUx.

Inheritance Theater Project is thrilled to deepen our relationship with CoGenerate (Formerly Encore.org) as our artistic director Zhailon Levingston participated in this exciting round table of Gen Z and Millennial leaders discussing working with older generations to solve pressing problems! Intergenerational partnership enriches our artistic process and community engagement. It makes the art better, too!
Today, we’re excited to release a new report summarizing what 31 Gen Z and Millennial leaders have to say about working with older people to solve pressing problems — aka “cogeneration” — and how it can be improved. It includes 8 key insights that stretch far beyond predictable stereotypes and 9 concrete recommendations for older leaders, colleagues and allies who want to work with younger generations more effectively! The quotes from the young leaders, ages 18-31, really make this report come to life. Please check it out and let us know what you think in the comments. What stood out to you and why? https://lnkd.in/g_cCZh5v A special thanks to all of the young leaders who participated in this study (Ariana Jasmine Afshar, Hulissa Aguilar, Brea Baker, Christopher Barnard, Allison Begalman, Sophie Beren, Dillon St. Bernard, Serena Bian, Jordan Bowman, Sydne Clarke, Thanasi D., Katie Eder, Kenna Embree, Jada Ford, Emily Garcia-Green, Natalie Green, Nonya Khedr, Mahmoud Khedr, Eve Levenson, Zhailon Levingston, Manu Meel, Ashwath N., Brittany T. Paschall, Raquel Padia, Apoorva Rangan, Carly Roman, Zev Shapiro, Cole Stevens, Pooja Tilvawala, Loren Waters & Denise W.), to the experts we interviewed (Joseph Cooper, Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg & Aleks Liou) and to AARP and The Eisner Foundation for their support.

Inheritance Theater Project is excited to share a new PBS documentary about our work in Hampton Roads, VA. Led by 9-time Emmy winning documentary producer and director Kendrick Hopkins Jr, a film crew followed our year-long process as it unfolded, from initial workshops to the final performance. It is an absolute gift for us to have this carefully crafted piece of art and storytelling to share more about the work of Inheritance Theater Project, and to highlight the incredible people we met in Virginia who made this work possible in their community.
