CODA accurately measures very thin metallic components down to 0.2 mm (0.007") / 0.4 mm (0.015") using L waves, providing exceptional accuracy of 2.5 µm (0.0001") even with very thin metallic materials. The Frequency Resonance technique is easy to set up by changing the measuring algorithm on thicknesses below 1mm (0.039"). While piezoelectric transducers require very high frequencies, which are difficult to deploy and produce inconsistent results, Innerspec's EMAT Frequency Resonance uses the same transducers for both thin and thick materials. Ultrasonic testing (UT) of aluminum ingots is essential to exclude billets with cracks during production. Traditionally, UT is performed manually with coupling gel or automated using dedicated stations equipped with water-column UT transducers. Manual inspections, while thorough, are labor-intensive and unrecorded, whereas automated stations require extra space and maintenance. This paper presents an automated inline UT system using Electromagnetic Acoustic Transducers (EMAT), a dry ultrasonic technique that integrates with existing conveyors, such as those leading into the billet saw. This innovative EMAT solution offers comprehensive records in a compact, cost-efficient package. Last week, our R&D team presented our "In-Motion Railcar Wheel Inspection Using Magnetostrictive EMATs" solution in Spain at the II Technical Conference on Materials and Technology R&D for Railway Construction and Maintenance. Railcar wheels are subject to heavy loads and stresses that cause both wear and material fatigue during routine service. Cyclic mechanical loading can cause surface defects and shallow internal fatigue cracks to form in the rim underneath the tread surface. Our second patent, which underpins VOLTA 2, has just been granted by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The first patent, awarded in 2021, covers the pulser/receiver circuit architecture, while this latest patent addresses an Automatic Impedance Matching circuit. This innovative circuit enables automatic signal optimization across various inspection conditions (such as material and liftoff) and works with any EMAT sensor design at any frequency.
