5 Illusions in Interviewing for Jobs As recruiters, we often see limiting beliefs in interviews holding job seekers back. How many of these do you think right now? Let's find out. 1. "I Must Answer Every Question Perfectly" This thought leads people to make up answers & overstate their experience while creating a mental tight rope to walk. In reality, interviewers are interested in your thought process, honesty, & how you handle challenging questions. 2. "The Interviewer is the Enemy/Gatekeeper" If you view the interview as a way to keep you out instead of include you, how well do you think you'll perform? Would you willingly share information with an enemy or give them the bare minimum and get out as quickly as possible? Interviewers aim to assess fit, not set traps. Humanize your interviewer and notice what happens. They are a person, just like you with a boss they need to please and a family they need to feed. 3. "It's All About My Qualifications" It's true that qualifications increase the odds of securing the interview, but it's not the only thing companies are looking for. When qualifications look similar, it's cultural fit, personality, & soft skills that make a person stand out. Good news. Soft skills are learnable and can always be improved. There are systems for everything, it's a matter of finding the right fit for you. 4. "If I'm Right for the Job, the Interview Will Be Easy" Assume nothing. A smooth interview doesn’t always guarantee a job offer. In fact, I know plenty of people who were ghosted after easy interviews. Sometimes, the right fit might come with tough questions & discussions. 5. "Rejections Mean I Performed Poorly" It's not all about you. Not getting the job doesn't always mean a poor interview performance. It could be due to various factors outside your control, like internal candidates or changing job requirements. With less interviews happening traditionally in Q4, it's a good time to take a step back and evaluate your game plan. What do you want & not want moving forward? Think about it. #getinsight
