It was an honor to partner with the Canadian Bankers Association to co-host the Canada Forum, bringing together Canada's financial and regulatory leadership for robust discussions on key issues transforming the industry. After CBA's Anthony Ostler and IIF's Tim Adams set the stage, we were delighted to be joined by Bank of Canada's Tiff Macklem and Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions Canada's Tolga Yalkin for discussions on Canada's economy and financial leadership, followed by timely and topical panels on Basel III, financial crime, and risks geopolitics pose to the sector. Thank you to all attendees for a fantastic discussion and to Deloitte for hosting!
Thank you Bank of Canada, Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions Canada, and participants who attended the Canada Forum hosted by the Institute of International Finance in collaboration with the Canadian Bankers Association. From working together to combat fraud, navigating through geopolitical risks, to strengthening regulation, supervision and risk management of banks, panelists shared insights on these important topics, motivating the industry to collaborate and better serve Canadians, progressing positively as a united country. #IIF2024

We have just announced a major milestone in Project Agorá: over 40 private sector financial firms, convened by the Institute of International Finance (IIF), will join the Bank for International Settlements and a group of leading central banks to explore how tokenisation can enhance wholesale cross-border payments. The BIS Innovation Hub has brought together seven central banks (representing the five top international reserve currencies): the Banque de France (representing the Eurosystem), the Bank of Japan, the Bank of Korea, the Bank of Mexico, the Schweizerische Nationalbank (Swiss National Bank), the Federal Reserve Bank of New York (through its New York Innovation Center) and the Bank of England. The IIF has convened regulated financial institutions representing a diversity of private sector partners in terms of business models, institution size, expertise and geography. This ambitious project builds on the unified ledger concept proposed by the BIS and will investigate how tokenised commercial bank deposits can be seamlessly integrated with tokenised wholesale central bank money in a public-private programmable core financial platform. This could enhance the functioning of the monetary system and provide new solutions using smart contracts and programmability, while maintaining its two-tier structure. BIS Innovation Hub projects are experimental and aim to develop public goods to support central banks and improve the functioning of the global financial system.
