The October 2023 "Occupational Noise Exposure: Risks and Controls" workshop examined the risk of occupational noise exposure for US workers and progress that has been made in controlling it. As noted by James Thompson in his workshop opening remarks, the issue of occupational noise exposure has long been recognized, and significant progress has been made in this area, yet significant challenges remain. With as many as 23 million American workers estimated to be overexposed daily, this is not a problem to be ignored. This workshop focused on four questions: 1. Are workers being adequately protected from overexposure to occupational noise? 2. What is the quality of life and economic impacts of worker overexposure, for the individual, employer, and nation? 3. What needs to be done to prevent overexposure? 4. Are there engineering solutions, other than noise controls, that could reduce the impact of overexposure? #Occupational #Noise #Exposure #Control #Hearing #acoustic #health #INCEUSA

The Noise Control Engineering Journal (NCEJ) is moving to a new website: https://lnkd.in/gQ3Pps5R. This new website and software will provide an improved paper submission and peer review process for all. All papers previously submitted through the old website will continue to be processed in the same way. However, all new submissions must go through this new site. Those who have submitted papers in the past or who have served as reviewers on the old website will have to register on the new site. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we are confident the improvements are well worth a few minutes of your time. We look forward to your new submissions and continued support of NCEJ. Two of the new I-INCE board members are from INCE-USA! Congrats to Judy Rochat and Dana Lodico!
I-INCE Elects new Vice Presidents and Board member The International Institute for Noise Control Engineering (I-INCE) elected three new members of the board at the Internoise in Nantes. Starting in 2025 Chiara Scrosati will be the VP for Communications, Dana Lodico will be the VP for Rules and Governance, and Judy Rochat will act as Director at Large from the Pan American region. I-INCE sponsors the annual Inter-Noise congresses, and of course Noise News International. Congratulations to our new board members and VPs!

Book Review: Design, Modeling, and Reliability in Rotating Machinery Much of the #noise we hear in buildings and industrial sites is from rotating machinery. Robert Perez has edited a book on this subject which includes: - Rotordynamics and torsional #vibration modeling - Hydrodynamic bearing design theory and current practices - Centrifugal and reciprocating compressor design and analysis - Centrifugal pump design, selection, and monitoring - General purpose steam turbine sizing Read NNI's book review by Raj Singh at: https://lnkd.in/ey5TyXqJ

New and beautiful interpretation of Lindsay's Wheel of Acoustics In 1964, Robert Bruce Lindsay introduced “The Science of Acoustics,” a graphical representation that has become popular and is often called the Wheel of #Acoustics. Olivier Robin, Marc Simard, Catherine Potel, and Michel Bruneau have reimagined Lindsay's Wheel with amazing art in their new publication in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America. NNI will repost sections of the artwork under Creative Commons License. This week we're showing the core of the wheel: fundamental and applied acoustics and #signalprocessing, which forms the foundation for the many other areas in acoustics. We'll post each of the four main quadrants in the coming weeks. You can see the entire artwork, in French and English, along with a 'blank' version you can use to fill in your own language at: https://lnkd.in/gVJPQstM

Soundscape Descriptors in 18 Languages: Soundscape Attributes Translation Project Update Describing the #soundscapes around us can vary widely – terms like pleasant, annoying, calm, quiet, vibrant, or lively are often used. For researchers in soundscape and #noise pollution, standard adjectives and attributes are essential tools for understanding people’s perceptions of acoustic environments through surveys and questionnaires. However, the nuances of meaning can be “lost in translation” between languages. The Soundscape Attributes Translation Project (SATP) involves 57 researchers from various countries providing “educated guesses” to translate the semantic scales of the ISO 12913 series of standards. Their work was just published in the September issue of Applied Acoustics. Read the full NNI article here: https://lnkd.in/eM7i9zsy
