Today we highlight how best to support children with processing difficulties. As with all learning difficulties, each child is different. Some children may have none or only a couple of the signs of slower processing, while others will struggle greatly. Children with slower processing will often have difficulty concentrating, which will affect memory and may give the impression that the child is not listening. Anxiety and stress often follow. Motor planning and behaviour is often compromised, as difficulty accessing the memory will cause problems when there is a need to remember rules & sequences. The auditory system may be functioning perfectly, but children with slower processing often have trouble understanding what they hear. Children with slower processing often struggle with reading. This may be due to a specific reading difficulties like dyslexia, but this is not always the case. If a text is long and laborious, it may be difficult to maintain concentration without visuals or different styles to maintain interest. Concentration, memory and reading difficulties can all contribute to poor self-esteem, as the individual may feel that they are not able to access or enjoy what others can. Strengthening poor working memory is essential when teaching following instructions. TOP TIPS ⭐️ Be within arms reach of the child maximum  ⭐️ Use their name first ⭐️ Break down the instructions into simple step by step and give one instruction at a time ⭐️ Model how to complete the task for visual learners  ⭐️ Use visuals to ensure understanding (these can be symbols or drawings on scraps of paper!) ⭐️ Encourage more able children to model and guide  ⭐️ Use special interests to help motivate where you can  ⭐️ Wait at least ten seconds after giving an instruction before repeating for a second time Don’t forget, supply teachers can gain further advice on how to support SEND by registering with the Institute of Supply Teachers and accessing CPD… for free! https://lnkd.in/e2RGsGzr #sensory #send #specialeducation #specialeducationteacher #specialistteacher #teacherssupportteachers #speechandlanguage #inclusion #educationmatters
