This #BlackHistoryMonth, the Institute for Public Health Innovation will finish the month by highlighting the legacy of the Black Panther Party's (BPP) Community Survival Programs. From 1966 to 1982, the BPP was a revolutionary organization that fought for health equity and social justice through health activism. The organization created groundbreaking initiatives that addressed critical needs in Black communities, including free food, clothing, healthcare, and education. Their work paved the way for modern social service programs such as free clinics, community education, and research. - Free clinics: The BPP operated clinics that provided essential services like vaccinations, screenings, and first aid, - Community education: The BPP educated communities about health issues like sickle cell anemia, lead poisoning, and hypertension, - Research: The BPP funded research into diseases that affected Black people. The BPP's health activism helped shape how the US addresses health and poverty today. Many former BPP members went on to work in public health and medicine. The BPP's work also contributed to the passage of the National Sickle Cell Anemia Control Act of 1972. #CommunityHealth #SocialJustice #BlackExcellence #Publichealth #Black #communityservice #communityHealthWork #DC #DMV #Virginia #WIC #socialservice #BlackHistory #sickleCell https://lnkd.in/e58R6e3r
