This research study shows that Ketamine is being successfully used to treat PTSD. What is amazing about this is that it includes the psychotherapy portion, which we believe is why ketamine therapy works so well. It is not just taking the ketamine and viewing it as a magic pill that will fix everything. This process is more about the work done outside of the dosing sessions to utilize the windows of neuroplasticity to implement coping skills, solidify self-regulation practices, shift negative beliefs, change maladaptive habits, and integrate than the dosing itself. "It is strange to me the absurd contradiction that as humans we all seek pleasure, for which we feel guilt. However, we negate the notion that psychological healing can take place in the context of enjoyment. (Though, not all – or even most – psychedelic experiences are necessarily pleasurable in the way we commonly use the term.) Ketamine is legal and safe when under the care of a competent provider. Ketamine became an FDA-approved medication in 1970 and is on the World Health Organization Essential Medication List. It is a glutamate modulator and works on the NMDA receptor. It, therefore, works differently from many other psychotropic medications, which mainly work on the Serotonin, Norepinephrine, or Dopamine receptors. As a ketamine-assisted psychotherapist and a Registered Expressive Arts Therapist (REAT), I can’t help but contemplate how these two domains – psychedelics and the arts – converge and overlap.  I often work with high-performing women with a spiritual bent. However, sometimes, what it takes to be “successful” in today’s modern world is not what is needed to feel happy (an amorphous word at best). "In my training to become a ketamine-assisted psychotherapist (KAP), I was incredibly optimistic about entering my first personal KAP session. I had been studying diligently and felt ready for the experiential component. My set intention for my first experience was “to allow.” In hindsight, this intention feels somewhat naive. It was, therefore, a tremendous shock that I was transported back to that fateful day in 1994. I had never really considered it a trauma because my life had changed for the better after it. However, neither had I ever explicitly addressed what I had been cutting off from myself since that time."

Evidence is growing on the benefits of psychedelic assisted therapy on treatment resistant mental illnesses. Many psychiatrists and therapists rely on antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications.
