In today's special episode (big #500!) host Pete Moore hands the mic to industry veteran Al Noshirvani and dives into a wealth of topics currently affecting the HALO (Health, Active Lifestyle, Outdoor) sector. Listen for insightful stories about overcoming business challenges, from employee and landlord issues to the complexities of deal funding, and aligning management teams. Pete shares his personal and professional experiences and Al (who has been "in the room" on some deal closings) praises Pete's innovative, out-of-the-box, deal-closing abilities and delves into how to maintain optimism and transparency in business transactions. Pete continues and discusses the pressures of public markets on companies like F45 and Peloton, and the high debt burdens imposed by private equity. He goes on to explore the need for gyms to adapt to emerging trends, such as family fitness and workout recovery, and lays out his vision for the future of the HALO space among societal health concerns. Finally, Moore hits hard on the (ever present, ultimately harmful, and yet still ongoing) "race to the bottom" in gym membership pricing, and his optimistic views on expanding activities like pickleball. On "irrational development" Pete states, "There's enough private equity out there so that you don't have to subject yourself to running a public company in the spotlight. Just keep it private, and run it methodically . . . I think the push to go public can cause people to get over their skis. And then when you do that, you crash hard. So that's gonna be an unfortunate black eye in the industry." A few key takeaways: 1. Pete dives into the intricacies of handling various obstacles in business deals, from employee issues and landlord disputes to the complexities of securing funding. He underscores the importance of maintaining optimism, transparency, and fostering fair and collaborative agreements for all parties involved. 2. Moore shares his personal fitness journey, highlighting the benefits of early workout to kickstart the day. Additionally, he discusses the importance of focusing on workout recovery, emphasizing the need for health clubs to integrate recovery programs to enhance member satisfaction and performance. 4. Pete discusses the pressure on companies like F45 and Peloton upon going public, given their low franchisee financials compared to competitors. He also touches on the increasing involvement of private equity leading to high debt burdens on companies. 5. Moore expresses optimism about the future, highlighting the potential amidst societal health concerns and the expansion of varied fitness activities. He emphasizes the need for health clubs to cater to family fitness, address the obesity crisis, and adapt to emerging activities like pickleball. https://lnkd.in/eHUCKYv8

🤣 Sad thing is? There are still places like this. The HALO sector really never got over the black eye it got (still has?) from back in the bad-old Bally's days. (Lifetime contracts and all the other nonsense.) Don't be this place. Have enough confidence in your product, your staff, and your marketing and know that regardless of what you do. . . people will cancel. Period full stop. It's not necessarily a bad thing. It's part of the industry. So obviously. . .continue to examine your staff, your systems, your marketing, your customer service SOP's and on and on. . .and do what you can to obviously reduce cancellations. . . but if/when it happens, make it easy. Don't make them jump through hoops. Thank them for their business. . and they may actually come back! But if you insist on playing @#$@#@ games like this? "Registered letter to so and so," or "a signed note from your doctor," or "something indicating you're moving" ad infinitum, ad nauseum (I've seen these and more) you can be SURE you'll never get them back. Worse? They'll definitely complain about it to others as well. https://lnkd.in/eBV5xRzB

When discussing 'good' versus 'bad' lighting, Kyle Harris, CEO of Brainlit, wants us to know it's not just about how it may look or how much energy it may save. It's also about how it affects our performance and mood, something especially important for athletes for example. When you're thinking about the value you get from something, like lighting in a new building, you want to see real, empirical results, especially when it comes to something that tends to normally be overlooked (or taken for granted) like lights. Kyle and his team have worked with companies that have installed their products. These groups have shared reports on how productive their workers are and how many sick days they take. And the results are impressive. They've found productivity went up by 7.5 percent, and sick days decreased by 10 percent. They can customize their tech to fit specific needs as well. Lighting is a guaranteed purchase during any build out. anyway . . . so definitely check out what Brainlit has to offer. Regardless of the vertical, growth requires a mix of learning, new ideas, and working together with others. Kyle Harris, CEO of Brainlit knows this well, especially in the field of lighting technology. A lot of people in the space, like architects and designers, don't fully understand all the amazing things proper lighting conditions can do. This is a bit of a challenge (for now), but it's also a chance to teach and grow. In Europe, Kyle and his team have also teamed up with Echo Phone, and Sango Bon--a big construction company. They call this the "sound bright" idea, and it's an example of a collaboration they hope to continue to replicate down the road. A new HALO Talks is out! Most of us tend to spend a majority of our time indoors, and Kyle Harris came across a company that has a much better way of lighting up our spaces. He is the CEO of BrainLit, a company based in Sweden, whose multi-patented tech helps brings the goodness of natural sunlight inside. Brainlit was started by Tord Wingren, one of the inventors of Bluetooth. Now, he's using his brainpower to make indoor light healthier. Brainlit uses special LED lights that copy the sunlight spectrum. When you're in a room lit by Brainlit, it's like being outside. That's good news for your health because our bodies respond well to natural light. Depending on the time of day and how it's set, it can be used to help athletes pre-game, post-game, with jet lag, improve productivity, and much more. Most of us don't get enough time outdoors, which can lead to health problems like obesity, cancer, and dementia. But with Brainlit, Kyle thinks we can change that. By bringing the benefits of sunlight indoors, we can make our workplaces and homes healthier places to be. This technology has been in use in Europe for quite some time, and is now slowly but surely gaining traction in the states. People may wonder why Michael Riordan decided to go in this particular direction with City Fit Tours. It stemmed simply from the fact that he wanted to make sure people had a great time while in NYC! He wanted to give folks visiting a special experience while also focused on staying healthy. Just being "another fitness studio" wasn't his plan. Instead, he wanted to help people explore the city while also taking care of themselves. He "could've made a gym with pictures of New York City," but that wouldn't be unique. The big idea clicked when he realized they were more like a tour company with a fitness twist, not the other way around. Founder Michael Riordan was leading all the tours initially, enthusiastically showing off NYC to excited visitors, when an old injury began acting up. He realized he had to rethink his approach. He had to ask others (mostly those in the performing arts!) to step in as tour guides, and this opened up a chance to expand more quickly. "We came up with the 'yoga walk,' a cool option for those who don't run but still want a healthy, outdoor start to their day," Michael explains. He brought in certified yoga teachers, giving them a chance to do something different outside the studio. "This team, all working independently, changed the game, especially for corporate groups," he says. They could now handle bigger groups of 50 to 100 people, splitting them into smaller groups with their own guide. "So, that's how our network grew, out of need, but it made us more varied and adaptable," Riordan states. In Hawaii, the sun is shining, the waves are crashing, and Michael Riordan found himself waiting in line . . . to run on a treadmill?! 🤔 That's the moment that gave him pause. As a personal trainer, he noticed something similar from his clients who traveled often for work. They would come back from cool places, but they didn't really experience anything local. This got him thinking about all the people who visit cities like New York and have a similar issue. He decided it was time to change how we interact with the places we visit and the communities we're a part of. That was the initial inspiration behind City Fit Tours Follow this page for more HALO sector updates (Health, Active Lifestyle, Outdoors) from Integrity Square/The HALO advisors. ACAC Fitness and Wellness is not your typical gym. Since its founding in 1984, the company has been challenging traditional ideas. Based in Charlottesville, Virginia, ACAC has always promoted inclusivity. Instead of the more "traditional" marketing of showing only idealized body types, ACAC aims to be a place where everyone feels welcome. . .and they built themselves from the ground up with that in mind. With a focus on science and medical insights, ACAC’s approach is simple: If they can make a positive difference in someone's life, they’re more likely to keep that member. For ACAC, it’s not just about fitness; it’s about truly impacting people’s lives for the long term.
