Embracing the Grind to Become a Successful Leader by Lyle Wells I’m not a baseball player. I was a basketball player, a college basketball coach. But I love, love the idea of being a baseball player when it comes to my leadership. Baseball is a grind. You play almost every day, from April 1st until the end of September—162 games. I think about that a lot when it comes to ministry. In the major leagues, a professional player will come to bat about 800 times during a season. He’s behind by 7 runs. His team is 15 games out of first place. It’s 95 degrees. He’s been away from home for almost a month. Wouldn’t you be tempted to swing three times, strike out, and head back to the air-conditioned dugout? I know I would. But that player knows only one thing: the grind. So, he’s going to dig into the batter’s box, fight off foul balls, and do everything he can to get on base. Because that’s what baseball players do. Leadership is a lot like baseball. When we truly embrace the grind, that’s when we become successful. Subscribe to the newsletter and get more leadership lessons inspired by baseball!

What Baseball Taught Me About Leadership by Cooper Kay As someone who played baseball for over 20 years, I learned a lot about leadership. Here are my top 10 leadership lessons from the game: 1️⃣ You have to be a little crazy if you want to be great. 2️⃣ Success doesn’t come often, so when it does, celebrate it. 3️⃣ Failure is inevitable, but don’t settle for it—rise above your setbacks. 4️⃣ Failure isn’t just a step on the path to success; it’s a foundational building block. 5️⃣ You have to hate losing way more than you love winning. 6️⃣ Not every at-bat needs to be a home run—sometimes, singles are exactly what you need. 7️⃣ Isolation is not an option—you can’t play all the positions. 8️⃣ Playing with fear means playing with failure. 9️⃣ Sometimes you do everything right and still lose; sometimes you do everything wrong and still win (trust me, I know). 🔟 Numbers can be more distracting than helpful. Drop the word “blog” in the comments, and I’ll send you a link to our blog post with more insights.
