THE IMPORTANCE OF OPEN SYSTEMS AND CYBER SECURITY IN DRILLING AUTOMATION Inteliwell is a truly open and independent automation platform for drilling rigs, deployable regardless of the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) that originally delivered the drilling package. It enables rigs to become “digital ready” with open interfaces to external third-party applications, automating existing drilling machinery, and integrating drilling equipment independently of the manufacturer. This creates consistent, optimized drilling or tripping processes that can continuously be refined for safety, speed, or complexity. Designed as an open data platform, Inteliwell ensures that the data from the drilling equipment is owned by the drilling contractor. With rapid developments in data science and AI, the importance of open systems that interact in a safe and structured manner is crucial for drilling contractors. Inteliwell prevents data from being “locked in” due to proprietary or commercial interests. However, as data is liberated, data security risks increase. Any deployment of data systems requires verification and the potential implementation of cyber-security measures. At Intellilift, having worked with drilling control systems from all the large OEM’s for more than 20 years, we possess deep and extensive knowledge in how data is exchanged in drilling control systems, and how to ensure the highest degree of protection from external threats and vulnerabilities. This has been confirmed by competent and independent third parties, who have reviewed and approved the overall cyber-security levels when Inteliwell has been installed on existing rigs with OEM drilling packages. Intellilift strongly advocates for open data systems and platforms. This is in our DNA. It is the only way the drilling industry can meet the future. But openness requires all vendors to share data and not lock into proprietary “behind bar” positions. Software upgrades, network encryption keys, network router configurations, and other data-sharing items must always be provided and available to the rig owner. This way, the rig owner can choose how the rig should be configured, not the supplier of a machine or control system.
