How Office Experts are Living in the Propeller Age I had the pleasure of attending the Yotta 2024 event this past week. The conference, "The Future of Digital Infrastructure," focused on 7 key pillars and brought together a spectrum of industry, government, investor, start-up, finance, and academic participants. The provocation for the conference was the growing realization that technological advancements, i.e., AI, are progressing faster than the existing infrastructure of data centers, hpc, high-capacity bandwidth, and sufficient power and water resources can support. New approaches and capital funding programs must be established to meet these demands. George Rockett contextualized the conference brilliantly by comparing the evolution of digital infrastructure to the transition from propeller-driven aircraft to jet engines. Just as jet aviation revolutionized airports with longer runways, advanced baggage systems, and sophisticated air traffic control, our approach to establishing intelligent infrastructure must evolve to meet the demands of the digital age. Our current office structures are akin to propeller airports—outdated and unable to support the needs of a distributed workforce fully. As metropolitan areas geographically expanded for decades, rapidly evolving digital technologies increasingly facilitated working remotely while exposing the limitations of 19th and 20th-century office and urban designs. COVID-19 further highlighted how digital networks can expand access between workers and employers. Just as old airports adapted to the impact of jets, innovative office models must align with the development of new supportive infrastructure. The INTELLIGENT INFRASTRUCTURE initiative, a pioneering effort championed by Jeffrey DeCoux, founder of the Autonomy Institute, plays a crucial role in ensuring that advancing digital technologies have the appropriate network designs, facilities, and capital support to optimize current and future uses. The journey to creating 21st-century secure distributed office networks, starting in metropolitan areas, is more than a cosmetic makeover. It's a call for a comprehensive infrastructure overhaul. We must recognize that building advanced, securely interconnected technology hubs is a monumental step beyond merely repainting old terminals.
