Day 2 of the Italy #Biochar Study Tour was a fantastic finish to the educational event demonstrating biochar's impact in Italian agriculture! 👏 Scientists and experts from C.N.R. Istitute of Bioeconomy - I.B.E spent the day with attendees, sharing innovative applications of biochar in vineyard soil at Felsina Farm and BADIA A COLTIBUONO. The day began with precision viticulture's introduction of new technologies like drones for supporting vineyard management with Salvatore Filippo Di Gennaro and Andrea Berton. Next, a deep-dive into soil science on site with Silvia Baronti, Fabio Castaldi, and Fabrizio Ungaro to develop an understanding of biochar, #soil, and #viticulture, soil spectroscopy, and more. Roberto Stucchi Prinetti provided an incredible insight into the historic Italian tradition of grape growing and winemaking — a beautiful cultural addition to a day of learning. Thanks to our partners at ICHAR 🇮🇹 for creating an incredible program for attendees rooted in local #biochar technology, vineyard soil science, agricultural innovation, and successful case studies. And of course, thank you to our attendees for making an incredible community; all of whom are doing impressive, creative, and important work in the biochar industry across the globe. ⭐ With many events coming up in 2025, we look forward to continuing biochar education initiatives in a region near you! Day 1 of the Italy #BiocharStudyTour with ICHAR 🇮🇹 was packed with production technology, case studies, and site examples of biochar in action! Starting the day at RE-CORD, participants heard from David Chiaramonti, David Casini, Edoardo Miliotti, Niccolò Pezzati and others about their pilot plants (like the slow pyrolysis and hydrothermal liquefaction units designed in-house) and many biochar-related projects happening across Italy. Steiner Ueli of Carbon Standards International AG shared about their biochar carbon standards and the impact that biochar offers as a climate change mitigation tool. After lunch, the Tour headed to Grevepesa oil mill to see the Yanmar Farm Circular Solution at work with Lorenzo Pezzola, Valerio Magalotti during the olive oil making process, from pressing to creating wood pellets from biomass waste — plus, an extra virgin olive oil tasting with a true olive oil sommelier. Much appreciation to the speakers for sharing their biochar knowledge with participants from across the world who are representing countries like Australia, Greece, the US, Croatia, England, and many more! Stay tuned for Day 2 insights tomorrow. ⭐️

Last week, I had a full circle moment stepping back into my alma mater, National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), yet again as a student but this time, also as an industry expert seeking climate solutions from around the world. It was a privilege being selected for the global #AssessGHGRemoveC project, part of the DAAD German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)-funded initiative, made possible by the genius minds at Hochschule Geisenheim University, Atta Ur Rahman School of Applied Biosciences, International Biochar Initiative and the untiring efforts of Professor Ghulam Haider. This enriching summer school, titled Biochar Academy offered invaluable insights into the role of biochar, an effective C-sink solution for climate action. The program was a refreshing blend of theoretical knowledge, practical applications and hands-on experiment. The lessons I have learnt from Biochar and GHG experts, Prof Claudia Kammann, Prof Carolyn Monika Görres, Dr. Moritz Wagner, are sure to stick with me for life. One of the most memorable aspects of the program was the hands-on training, where we produced biochar using NUST’s patented #KonTiki kiln, pictured below. It demonstrated how biochar production can be adapted to different contexts, even with small-scale local methods using available biomass that can contribute to a circular economy. I also had the opportunity to present a project I am passionate about, integrating new knowledge from the academy; a Top Lit Up Draft (#TLUD) improved cookstoves initiative for rural communities. My brilliant group mates Dr. Farhana, Warda Shafiq and I came up with a hypothetical company, endearingly named EcoSisters, for proposing this carbon management initiative. These stoves were theorised to trade in the adverse health impacts of open-fire cooking and deforestation, with a method to produce biochar that can enhance soil fertility. A triple win for improving public health, sequestering carbon, and supporting climate adaptation efforts. I’m also incredibly lucky to have learnt from and present questions to academic and industry experts like Helmut Gerber at Pyreg GmbH, Hans-Peter Schmidt and Nikolas Hagemann at Ithaka Institute, Heloise Buckland founder at HUSK, Lukas Van Zwieten, Stephen Joseph, Muhammad Farooq Qayyum, Emir Hasanagic, Nikolaus Wohlgemuth at Carbonfuture, Dominic Hafner and Luki Fathia at Carbon Standards International AG. Programs like these are essential for bringing together passionate minds, innovative ideas, and practical tools for effective climate action. I’m eager to see what the future holds for Pakistan and how I can contribute, especially with a deeper understanding of how biochar can support our climate adaptation efforts.🌱 #ClimateAction #Biochar #CarbonSequestration #Sustainability #ClimateSolutions #BiocharAcademy #AssessGHGRemoveC #NUST #ASAB #DAAD #IBI #CSI #CarbonMarket #CarbonCredits #CSink
